State Senate Bill Aims to "Jump Start" Arts Education Funds
|
|
Senate Bill 933, authored by Senator Ben Allen, is the first legislative step in the process of providing school districts with a "jump start" in arts education funding, enabling schools to fulfill the language of California Education Code, which requires that every student shall receive arts education as part of a complete high quality education. California Education Code states that every K-12 student shall receive instruction in and access to arts education. Yet the California Arts Education Data Project concludes that only 39% of students in California public schools participate in the arts, and that access is significantly lower in low-income and rural schools. We know the arts prepare our students to enter the workforce by fostering skills that include innovation, persistence, and collaboration. In addition, the creative industries account for one out of every ten jobs in California, and provide $273 billion annually to our state's economy. Access to arts education instruction should not be determined by where a student happens to live. SB 933 honors the promise of our Education Code by helping to ensure that the arts are part of the education that every student receives. New Theater Venue Effort Launched in City of Orange
|
A new effort has been launched to create a performing arts venue in the City of Orange through a $15 million fundraising campaign over the next five years. The Greater Orange Community Arts Theater Foundation intends to transform the current Little Theater at Orange High School, which lacks air conditioning and adequate equipment into a state-of-the-art 590 seat facility that will not be for exclusive use by the school, but open for community performances as well.

BETTY MOSS, the founding Executive Director of the Orange County Business Committee for the Arts, has died at 86. She helped encourage corporate support for the arts community at a time when the Orange County Performing Arts Center was becoming a reality, beginning in 1981 through the dissolution of the organization in 2009. MACGILLIVRAY/FREEMAN FILMS of Laguna Beach, one of the world's premier IMAX filmmakers, is receiving New York Festivals' 8th Annual Lifetime Achievement Award. Chairman/Director Greg MacGillivray will receive the award on behalf of the company he founded fifty years ago with the late Jim Freeman. He is a 2008 recipient of Arts Orange County's Helena Modjeska Cultural Legacy Award.

| Report Released on Status of Arts Education Standards |
The National Coalition for Core Arts Standards (NCCAS) has released a new report on the status of arts standards revisions across the nation. The report, titled "The Status of Arts Standards Revisions in the United States since 2014," includes a comprehensive list of states who have revised their arts standards since the publication of the National Core Arts Standards in June, 2014. The National Core Arts Standards for dance, media arts, music, theatre, and visual arts, were written to guide educators seeking to provide quality arts education for America's students, define artistic literacy, and support 21st century skills and college and career readiness.
