April 28, 2019 ~ Building Community One Positive Story at a Time
Now taking nominations for the 2019 East Bridgewater Rotary Citizen of the Year award.

This will be the 20th consecutive year that three awards have been presented to citizens of the Bridgewaters who have made substantial contributions to the quality of life in their town.

The event has been sponsored for the past nine years by Bridgewater Savings Bank, helping to provide $2,500 per year for Community Service Awards (scholarships) to graduating seniors from the Bridgewaters. There will be a special ceremony this year as the club invites all past recipients to be in attendance in addition to this year's award recipients. Find a copy of the nomination form here.

Historical Tidbit:
East Bridgewater Sesquicentennial Commemorative Medal

The face of the Medal depicts the early building of the Carver Cotton Gin Company, including its beautiful bridge spanning the Satucket River.

The structures have long since been replaced, but the location is still the same. The Cotton Gin Company is one of the many early industries which played an important part in the lifestyle of this town.

The words "Pioneering in Industry" and "Time Past - Time Present" appear along with the dates 1823-1973. The reverse of the Medal is the Town Seal. The medal was first available in November of 1972, was designed by Richard Bartlett, and was struck by the V.H. Blackinton & Co. Inc., Attleboro Falls, Massachusetts.

The Town Seal on the reverse of the medal was designed by Mr. Jarvis Burrell and depicts the purchase of the land known as Bridgewater from Chief Ousamequin (Massasoit) of the Wampanoag tribe.

In honor of Earth Day
I'd like to celebrate Massachusetts moving toward healthier electricity sources.

In the 1990's while working for medical respiratory supply company, I personally spoke to respiratory therapists daily in West Virginia. They shared with me stories of the huge numbers of patients suffering COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) because of the coal mines. Coal mining is harming the environment and sickening the people of West Virginia. And then I learned, at that time, that 50% of our electricity in Massachusetts came from coal burning plants, polluting our air after doing it's damage to West Virginia. Flash forward to today: Massachusetts closed our last coal fired plant last year and is leading the country in energy innovation. While there is much debate on which technologies to invest in... at least we ARE investing. In honor of Earth Day, that's something to celebrate. Because making these changes as a society is hard, but they do happen, we can move forward.
We have the most power to create change right here at home. It's exciting to see. There's hope for the future. Here are some resources our Commonwealth Provides: MA Dept of Energy Resources
