ShelterCare Behavioral Health
At this year's Art Gives Hope, we featured quilt squares with clients' handwritten messages of hope on them. The square above says "As long as you are alive there is still hope."  See more photos on ShelterCare's Facebook page.

"Mental Health" surfaces as an explanation every time there is an episode of mass gun violence in our country. It is a sadly misleading alignment. In the book Gun Violence and Mental Illness, authors Liza Gold and Robert Simon argue that less than 5% of mass shootings are committed by someone with a diagnosable psychiatric disorder. Dr. Jeffrey Swanson, one of the leading experts on mental illness and violence, writes: "the vast majority of people with mental illness are not violent and never will be." Only about 4% of all cases of violence can be attributed to schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression combined. The appeal to "Mental Health" as a cause for mass violence is a red herring that will only be vanquished when stigma and stereotypes about mental illness change.

The good news is that more and more popular culture figures - artists and athletes - are sharing openly their struggles with mental health diagnoses. The good news is that more and more of our community members with mental health diagnoses are entering the work force, sharing stories of their recovery, and disproving the "dis" in disability associated with a mental health diagnosis. A silver lining might be that public financial investment in community treatment and support services could increase with a continued emphasis on "Mental Health." That is something we can urge our legislators at state and federal levels to support.

Sincerely,

Susan Ban
Executive Director
