Congratulations Doctors! Commencement 2019

Congratulations to the 55 members of the class of 2019 who are among the nation's newest physicians. The Schmidt College of Medicine held its fifth commencement ceremony in the Carole and Barry Kaye Auditorium, celebrating a long-anticipated day as it conferred the Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degrees to the graduating class.
 
 
Dr. Weinert Receives Degree of Difference Award

Congratulations to Dayna M. Weinert, M.D., who won the Degree of Difference award at the University Honors Convocation. Established in 1996, the Degree of Difference award is presented annually by the FAU Alumni Association in recognition of a faculty member's positive impact upon, and special contributions to, his/her students.

Researchers Join Forces to Treat Stroke

Jang-Yen (John) Wu, Ph.D., professor of biomedical science, and Brian Snelling, M.D.chief of cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery and medical director of the Marilyn and Stanley Barry Center for Cerebrovascular Disease and Stroke at the Marcus Neuroscience Institute and Boca Raton Regional Hospital, 
have joined forces to combine a breakthrough interventional procedure for stroke with a novel drug compound that has neuroprotective properties.

Heroes in Medicine  

Congratulations to the 2019 Heroes in Medicine award winners, which include faculty, affiliate faculty, students and partners from the Schmidt College of Medicine. The heroes will be officially honored at the 16th Annual Heroes in Medicine Award Ceremony on Friday, May 17. Please join us in celebrating the award recipients. 


Medical Student Highlights 

First-year medical students, Marcella Zamis and Daniel Nolan Parker, attended the South Florida Chapter of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) 2019 Annual Meeting on Saturday, March 16.

Ms. Zamis presented an oral presentation titled: "A case study of negative-pressure wound therapy with instillation in the complex trauma patient."

Mr. Parker presented an oral presentation titled: "The solution to pollution is dilution: use of negative pressure wound therapy with instillation in limb salvage of lower extremity septic arthritis after trauma: case report."
Congratulations to third-year medical student, Kimberly Herard , who was awarded the Dr. LaToya Smith Memorial/Carson Medical School Scholarship.  This scholarship   is competitively awarded to African-American female students pursuing degrees in medical disciplines from an accredited medical school in the United States.

Kimberly was recommended to receive this scholarship for her academic achievements and also for her participation in a myriad of community activities including her participation at the annual Caridad Clinic Community Fair and for demonstrating leadership skills as the president of the Student National Medical Association Chapter of FAU since 2016.

            

Faculty Members Attend Ribbon Cutting of the New American Heritage STEM Building

Ken Dawson-Scully, Ph.D., associate vice-president for strategic initiatives and associate professor of biological science, and Gary Rose, M.D., associate professor of clinical biomedical science, represented Florida Atlantic University at the ribbon cutting of the new Scientific Research, Engineering, Robotics, and Prototyping building at American Heritage School on Wednesday, April 10.
 
Attendees included the mayor of Delray Beach, the mayor of Boca Raton, members of local congress, and keynote speaker, Bill Nye "The Science Guy." 
 
Dr. Dawson-Scully and Dr. Rose both gave an address to the attendees. Dr. Dawson-Scully discussed the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience, and Dr. Rose highlighted the Schmidt College of Medicine and the Pipeline Programs.
TLJMS Hosts Seventh Annual Health and Science Career Symposium
 
The  T. Leroy Jefferson Medical Society (TLJMS)  of Palm Beach hosted the 7th Annual Health & Science Career Symposium on Saturday, April 13. Students came from as far away as Melbourne to attend this great event.  
 
The T. Leroy Jefferson Medical Society (TLJMS) is comprised of dedicated healthcare professionals working together to improve health and wellness, access to quality care, and academic and career opportunities for underserved populations in Palm Beach County.
 
 

Dr. Bamdas Receives the FAU President's Leadership Award

Congratulations to Jo Ann Bamdas, PhD., director of the FAU Office of Interprofessional Education and affiliate faculty of the Schmidt College of Medicine, who received the 2019 FAU President's Leadership Award.
 
Dr. Bamdas received the prestigious honor due to her exemplary role of managing the Interprofessional Education (IPE) program. 
 
Dr. Bamdas was formally recognized at the Employee Service Award Ceremony held on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 in the Barry & Florence Friedberg Lifelong Learning Center. As part of the President's Leadership Award, her name will be inscribed on a plaque that is on permanent display in the Administration Building.
