Ribbon Cuttings
On September 12th, we celebrated SEE International's new headquarters in Goleta. Click here for more information on SEE International.

For the first time this November, Goleta residents will directly elect a Mayor to serve a two-year term and there are two incumbents running. Paula Perotte has been on the Goleta City Council since 2010. Michael T. Bennett has been on the Goleta City Council since 2006.

Usually, the Goleta Chamber of Commerce makes an endorsement in these important races that have an effect on local business and community, however, this year is different.  The City Council made a new, controversial, and unique policy decision, that bans the Chamber of Commerce from endorsing candidates for Goleta City Council and Mayor.  The restriction is connected to the Chamber's economic development contract to provide the GoGoleta visitor services program to tourists and visitors in Goleta.  The Chamber has vociferously opposed this restriction, but while we work through this contract negotiation with the City, we will provide our members information on the candidates in lieu of an endorsement.

Michael T. Bennett has always answered the call to serve Goleta. For 36 years he served as a firefighter and battalion chief. He's led efforts for a new fire station, peak-hour train service and a multi-modal transit center.    Michael will balance development, protect our environment and strengthen the economy. Michael has been a Chamber member for decades. The Goleta Chamber endorsed Michael in 2006, 2010 and 2014.  While not always voting 100% with the Chamber's policy platform, he has been an advocate for economic development and many chamber-endorsed programs.  Michael as been a strong advocate for the hospitality industry, serves on the Housing Trust Fund board of directors, was an original member of the Goleta Old Town Project Area Committee and from his seat on SBCAG (Santa Barbara Coalition of Governments) has advocated with the Chamber on issues related to transportation.  Michael also sits on the Chamber's Friends of Goleta Beach Committee.

A 35-year Goletan, Paula Perotte has served on City Council for 8 years, 3 as Mayor.  She serves on numerous boards and committees spanning housing, transportation and social services. Her diverse experience includes piemaker, busdriver, 15 years with PTA, working at her family high-tech business, and advocating for children at CAC. Paula has often voted with the Chamber's policy platform, but has voted with us fewer times than Mr. Bennett. Paula endorses the Chamber's mission statement and states her support for business.  She has worked with the Chamber on presenting the Dam Dinner. Paula  has been a long-time advocate for children and worked many years on Safe Routes to Schools.

Four candidates are running for the two open seats on the  Goleta Water District  board this November. All four candidates participated in the Chamber's candidate forum, including Thomas Evans, a water resources engineer; Matias Eusterbrock, an environmental analyst; Bobbi McGinnis, a real estate agent; and Kathleen Werner, a retired water chemist. All shared their plans of leadership if elected to the board.

The Chamber's Board of Directors has reviewed each candidate's platforms and priorities and are endorsing  Tom Evans and Kathleen Werner for Goleta Water District.

Tom Evans is the most qualified candidate running for the Goleta Water Board. He has over 40 years of experience working on public water and wastewater systems in this area. He has worked for Goleta Water and knows how the system works. He is ready to provide his expertise and leadership to this community.

Kathleen Werner is a long time Goleta resident having moved here from Philadelphia 32 years ago to attend UCSB where she received her master's degree in chemistry.  She has 2 children and has been continually active in the community.  She is currently serving as the chair of the Parks and Recreation commission for the City of Goleta.

The Chamber's Board of Directors  was looking for candidates who would actively champion new water supply strategies and engage with regional partners on a long-term water strategy. Tom Evans' 42 years of engineering experience and his knowledge of all of the jurisdictions in Santa Barbara County is important to the Board. Kathleen Werner's long history of working collaboratively in water related agencies made her a fit for the Chamber's platform.

The Goleta Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce the 2018 Goleta's Finest Award Winners. Goleta's Finest is a 69-year old tradition honoring remarkable individuals whose contributions have enhanced the Goleta community.

The 2018 award recipients will be honored with a formal celebration on Saturday, December 2nd, 6:00-9:30 p.m. at the beautiful Ritz-Carlton Bacara.  The evening will include food stations, wine and beer, followed by the awards ceremony.
