 Despite the cold, snow and Super Bowl week festivities, about 40 community members joined the City of Shakopee for a community workshop on January 30 as part of the city's 2040 Envision Shakopee comprehensive plan process.
At the workshop, community members met in small groups to discuss how the city could best address four previously identified community priorities:
- Maintain a strong and diverse economy
- Expand housing options
- Enhance the transportation system
- Connect people with parks, trails and amenities
The workshop was led by the city's planning consultants, MKSK Studios, and city staff. At round tables of six people plus a facilitator, groups discussed strategies and priorities for the plan. After more than an hour of discussion, each small group reported their major findings to the larger group. Participants identified a variety of opportunities from additional senior housing to improved access to the Minnesota River. They supported a variety of strategies to improve our transportation system and help residents be more connected to jobs, area businesses and parks.
Community engagement is a top priority of the Envision Shakopee planning process and the city understands not everyone is able to attend a community meeting. The workshop was the second of three planned events through spring 2018. The results from your feedback on these strategies and priorities will fold into the other community engagement data and planning analysis, which will inform the planning team as they draft the recommendations of the plan in the coming months. The third and final community event, which will invite you to review and comment on the comprehensive plan's draft focus areas and recommendations, is tentatively scheduled for April.

Two Free Funding Sources for Small Businesses
For  small companies, access to funding that can help their business grow and thrive is extremely beneficial. To that end, the SBA wants to make sure you're aware of two free resources available to you: MN-SBIR and the SciTechsperience Internship Program.
MN-SBIR helps science-based startups and existing small businesses to access non-dilutive research funding. Eleven federal agencies competitively award funding for high tech research and development that has the potential for commercialization as a new product, service or process. There is no limit to the number of awards or dollar amount a company can receive, and the company retains its intellectual property and has the potential for sole-source contracts.

The SciTechsperience Internship Program
is a free, state-funded program that connects small (under 250 employees worldwide) for-profit Minnesota companies to college STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) majors for paid internships, and provides a 50% cash match on the intern's wages.
This wage reimbursement is worth up to $2,500 per intern. There are just under 280 wage matches available now for 2018 STEM internships. The pool of hundreds of talented, pre-screened college students are eager to find a quality internship in a company like yours. You make the hiring decision, and may bring on as many as 5 interns per program year.

Minnesota's First Responders Push PTSD Issue at State Capitol
Minnesota's police officers, firefighters and EMTs are lining up in support of a proposed bill to change the state's workers' compensation law and designate post-traumatic stress disorder a presumptive, work-related medical condition. Sen. Nick Frentz, DFL-North Mankato, is one of the bill's sponsors. He said his intent is to make it easier for first responders to seek a workers' compensation claim by making PTSD a presumptive, on-the-job injury.
Cam Winton, director of energy and labor management policy with the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, told KSTP there will likely be a separate bill from Frentz's. That bill will focus more on PTSD treatment options, rather than placing it under the umbrella of the workers' compensation law, Winton said.
"We all want first responders who are diagnosed with PTSD to get the help they need," Winton said. "And we think the best way to do that is to make sure they are getting the best treatment possible, so that they can remain in the profession and have productive lives outside the job."
The Minnesota League of Cities expressed similar thoughts on how to approach the PTSD issue for first responders.
