Traffic Pilot Programs Coming as Village Removes No-Right Turn Signs

As the Village gets ready to remove the no-right turn signs along SW 87th Avenue, following direction from Miami-Dade County, three new pilot programs are in the planning stages that will reduce cut-through traffic for three areas plagued by congestion during peak hours. One of the areas is the Malbrook Neighborhood where the no-right turn signs were installed pending the completion of the new traffic circle at the intersection of SW 168th Street and 82nd Avenue. Traffic counts will be measured before and after the launch of the pilot programs. The information will be shared with the county for a determination on possible permanent restrictions if the figures justify such decision.

The pilot programs will be launched in late September for a period of 60-days. The launch date was selected based on the current schedule of the drainage project currently underway on SW 87th Avenue, which is scheduled for completion just before the school year ends. In an effort to assess traffic information that is accurate, the projects will be implemented once classes resume to ensure that the traffic data collected accurately describes traffic conditions in the areas. Launching all three programs at the same time also provides a better overall picture of the impact on traffic that these programs will have village-wide.

Information concerning each program is provided below:

Malbrook Neighborhood Pilot Program
The proposed pilot program includes the installation of temporary delineators to prevent right turns into the streets identified on this map

Southwood Area Pilot Program Information
This pilot program consists of the installation of temporary delineators, as further shown on this map, to restrict left turns from SW 165 th Terrace onto SW 83 rd Avenue and SW 82 nd Court. This is another area where residents have complained about heavy cut-through traffic.

Coral Reef Drive & Old Cutler Road Pilot Program Information
This pilot program consists of installing temporary delineators to restrict left turns from SW 77 th Avenue to SW 156 th Street, also restrict left turns from SW 156 th Street into SW 76 th and SW 75 th Avenues and restrict left turns from SW 75 th Avenue into SW 157 th Terrace. Drivers currently use these cut-through routes to avoid the southbound traffic on Old Cutler Road. The project map specifies the areas and restrictions proposed for the pilot program.

Miami-Dade County has directed the Village to remove the no-right turn signs on SW 87th Avenue by Monday, February 19th.
In Case You Missed It...Coyote Workshop Comes to Palmetto Bay this February 20th!
As reported earlier in January, there have been several coyote sightings in Palmetto Bay over the past months. Several residents have seeing the illusive mammals roaming Palmetto Bay streets.

In a recent interview with NBC Channel 6,
Palmetto Bay resident Sandi Dunmann confirmed that she had spotted a coyote in her neighborhood. Residents, like Mrs. Dunmann, have expressed concern over the safety of their small pets.

Mayor Flinn has received several reports of animals being removed. "We've had a few incidents of people observing actual cats being taken", indicated Mayor Flinn to NBC Channel 6 . The Mayor has documented the sightings in his personal blog and has invited representatives from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation (FWC) to head an informational workshop at Village Hall to discuss how residents can coexist with coyotes and also present valuable biological information on these species.

According to the FWC, there have been 67 documented cases of coyotes found throughout the state. The agency is looking to provide guidance to avoid conflict with the wildlife and to ensure the safety of the residents and the animals. The story has also been featured in this Miami Herald article .
