May 8 Plans

In last week's Hot News, we talked about the statewide "Day of Action," in which teachers around Oregon are planning a walkout in hopes of spurring the Legislature to act on providing stable and adequate funding for K-12 education. At this time, we do not believe we will be able to ensure safe, supervised environments for students on May 8, and therefore will not be holding school. The effect will be similar to a snow day, in which school and after-school events are canceled but District offices remain open. There are a handful of exceptions to this for activities that cannot be rescheduled. Students in grades K-11 will now attend a full day of school on Friday, June 14, rather than a half day, and school staff will return to work for an additional day on Tuesday, June 18. Record Your HSD Story This Week

In preparation for our all-staff kick-off event on Tuesday, Aug. 27, we are gathering video clips filmed by YOU. We want to create a dynamic picture of who we are as a community by recording a week in HSD through the eyes of our staff. Recordings should be made between April 29 and May 3. Brookwood Groundbreaking

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held on Monday, April 29, at 4 p.m., to commemorate the start of construction on the replacement building for Brookwood Elementary School. The public is welcome and invited to attend.

Licensed Listening Session

A Licensed Listening Session will be held on Thursday, May 2, from 3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. at Quatama Elementary School. All licensed staff are welcome and invited to attend.

Resilience Webinar

On Tuesday, Apr. 30, Reliant Behavioral Health will hold a free Resilience Webinar from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The webinar will provide tips and daily mindfulness practices to help reduce stress increase resilience in the classroom.

Superintendent Coffee Chats

Superintendent Scott's final Coffee Chats of the spring will take place on Tuesday, April 30, from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m., at Longbottom Coffee and Tea, 4893 NW 235th Ave.; and on Thursday, May 2, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at Lincoln Street Elementary School, 801 NE Lincoln St. The May 2 event is intended for Spanish-speaking families, but anyone is welcome and interpretation in English will be provided. Please join us to learn more about important activities taking place in the District and to ask any questions you may have.

Proud to be HSD Festival

Less than two weeks to go until our 5th Annual Proud to be HSD Festival on Saturday, May 11, and we are gearing up for a GREAT event! More than 300 pieces of student art will be on display and people who complete the Art Walk Scavenger Hunt will not only see all of this amazing art and learn more about Main Street businesses, they will also be entered to win one of several prize packages. Students from all levels will be participating in the STEAM Pavilion, doing demonstrations and engaging attendees in hands-on activities; and across the Plaza, high school students will be showcasing their career- and college-related learning in the Career and College Pathways area. Our two performance stages are almost booked out - with just a few slots remaining on each. Contact MaryKay Babcock if you'd like to sign up. New this year are a shuttle system to get student participants and their guardians to the event, and a Youth Cornhole Tournament. Rounding out the day will be our new and improved Mascot Challenge with over 20 school mascots represented! Mark your calendars and don't miss it!

Section 125 Plan Enrollment

The District's spring Section 125 enrollment will begin May 6 and end June 6. An American Fidelity representative will be at each school site to meet with employees who would like to take advantage of these benefits. Please note that during this year's enrollment, there will be an option for employees to sign up for short-term disability without answering health questions. Hip 2B Square

If you have not yet had a chance to see the Hip 2B Square Community Art Show at Sequoia Gallery in downtown Hillsboro, 136 SE 3rd Ave., you have until Friday, May 3, to do so. Thanks to a generous grant from the Cultural Coalition of Washington County, high school students were able to participate free of charge, and the gallery dedicated a majority of its wall and display space to student entries. Congratulations to Century sophomore Adrei Barrett for winning Best Student Work in Two Dimensions, and to Liberty junior Aislin Callaghan for winning Best Student Work in Three Dimensions.

Shred Event

The Hillsboro Police Department, in collaboration with the Hillsboro Schools Foundation (HSF), is holding a Shred Event on Saturday, May 4, from 8 a.m. to noon, at the Hillsboro School District Office, 3083 NE 49th Place. Secure shredding is on-site with a three banker box-size limit; event ending time may change if trucks fill sooner. A $5 suggested donation benefits HSF.

National School Lunch Hero Day

Between preparing healthy food, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, HSD nutrition professionals have a lot on their plate. To recognize their hard work and commitment, we will join school districts across the country in celebrating National School Lunch Hero Day on Friday, May 3. This day provides students, parents, school staff, and community members with an opportunity to thank those who provide healthy meals to 30 million of America's students each school day.

Liberty FalCon 2019

Liberty High School's Strategy Games Club is hosting its 2nd Annual Liberty FalCon on Friday, May 10, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., in the school's commons, 7445 NE Wagon Dr. Described as a comics, gaming, and geek/nerd culture convention, the event will feature guests ranging from gaming museum curators to small business owners to professional writers for companies like Wizards of the Coast. Prizes will  be awarded during the convention's cosplay competition. FalCon is open to all HSD high school students and their families; cost is $3 per person, $8 per family, or free if you donate a game. District Retirement Celebration

HSD will hold its annual celebration for retiring staff members on Thursday, May 23, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., in the South Meadows Middle School Library, 4690 SE Davis Rd. Click here to see a list of retirees, and please mark your calendars for this fun and inspiring event.

Year-End Payroll Update

Please review the Year-end Payroll Memo listing June pay dates for 10- and 12-month staff members. Please make sure your address is accurate in iVisions and that the Payroll department has your correct bank account information on file no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, May 31, to ensure you will receive your paychecks on time.
