 President's Message

As summer break for the Friends of the Library arrives, it is the perfect time to take a moment to reflect on the outstanding work you have done to promote a love of reading, and encouraging our community to love our library and discover all it offers. Your efforts have provided the additional resources that truly make our Rocklin library stand above the rest. Thank you for your time, your energy, your creativity, and your commitment.
As we spend this year celebrating Rocklin's 125th birthday, I have had many opportunities to reflect on the people who helped build our city, and their efforts to bring services to Rocklin so that the city could thrive. What stands out in my mind is how they worked as a team: Rocklin was a very diverse community with Finnish, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Irish, and other families who all worked together to build a City that is now recognized as one of the best places to raise a family in the United States.
The work you do as a member of the Friends of the Library truly helped to preserve a library system that was suffering from little financial support. You too are a team, and your efforts are appreciated, significant and a source of pride.
Thank you all. We will be taking a summer break from June-August, and look forward to gathering again on September 11, 2018 at 10:00 am. I know you will return rested, relaxed, and hopefully with some creative ideas on projects for our group.

Library Hero: Scott Yuill

A longtime resident and business owner in Rocklin - and three-term Rocklin councilmember in his twelfth year - Scott Yuill has always been supportive of the Rocklin Library. In fact, he was one of five councilmembers who served on the Redevelopment Agency that purchased the present library building for its current use. Scott recalls the City had plans to build a new library in the Civic Center, but the severe recession made such a goal unattainable. According to Scott, the city manager at the time, Carlos Urrutia, identified the then-vacant commercial building as an ideal location, and creatively found funding through the Redevelopment Agency to make the purchase. The result was our marvelous Rocklin Library of today, and Scott is confident the community shares in his pride.
When Placer County embarked on community outreach for design ideas of the building's interior, Scott remembers participating in focus groups, and has fond memories working side-by-side with Francine Yorde, one of the most ardent supporters of libraries he knows. And Scott quickly learned how passionate Francine - a dedicated member of the Friends of the Library - was about books after he questioned why the library needed so many shelves when "everything" was going to electronic readers. No words, only a stern glare (then a smile) from Francine set him straight, and more shelves it would be. Much credit for our community's support of the Rocklin Library can be attributed to Francine.
During a Catholic education throughout grade school, Scott recalls the nuns - and rather persistent nuns indeed - drilling into Scott the importance of reading for learning. He would often ride his bike to his local library in Carmichael to research assignments. He remembers researching on clumsy microfilm and microfiche readers, accompanied by good old-fashion, dog-eared encyclopedias, and tediously searching for books with the Dewey Decimal System. Using the library was an early foundation of his learning, and he marvels at how much research has improved through technology.
Because of heavy reading demands for business and city responsibilities, Scott regrets not finding as much time as he would like to read for pleasure. But when he does, he enjoys books on history and economics. He is presently reading The High Cost of Good Intentions by John F. Cogan.
Scott believes it is important for libraries to remain relevant now and into the future. Libraries should provide broad services with various media and research tools. They should be a place for community events and the public to gather. And they should stay up-to-date in the digital world to keep younger readers engaged. Scott acknowledges that, unfortunately, remaining relevant costs money. So finding adequate funding will always be a challenge, but worth the effort.

Celebrate Your Birthday With Friends!

In an effort to share our love of reading with the children in Rocklin, The Friends have begun a new program this year centered around giving a free book to kids in our community on their special day! Parents and guardians can sign up their children (aged 2-10) for a free book during their birth month. A brand new age-appropriate book will be selected for their child and an email will be sent to the parent or guardian with pick up information once the books are ready.
Our partners at Umpqua Bank on Stanford Ranch Road are collecting new books to aid in our effort of giving a free book to every child who is signed up. But that's not all! Our friends at Icing on the Cupcake make these gifts sweeter by giving each child a free "Baby Bite" Cupcake from their Rocklin bakery!
The Friends are truly humbled by the community support this program has garnered and are proud to say that we have over 250 kids signed up so far this year! Programs like this are made possible because of our generous members and donors. Visit our website at

Book Lovers Find Bargains!

Book lovers continue to satisfy their cravings by shopping at the Friends' bookstore, ebay and the super surplus book sales.
In the first five months of 2018, we've raised more than $4,000 through sales in the book store, which is located just inside the entrance of the Rocklin library. We have a wide range of popular fiction selections, including book group recommendations, non-fiction in a wide range of genre, children's books, DVDs and CDs.
Our ebay store is gaining in visibility and popularity. It recently received Top Rated seller status, which recognizes good customer service as well as more than $1,000 in sales since it opened. We've collected approximately $1,800 in sales, including one purchase by an international collector, since January.
The super surplus book sales continue to attract book lovers. In the first two sales we've held this year, we've raised $455 and gained 15 new members. Our next sale will be held Saturday, June 2. Friends can fill a bag for $2 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the Community Room. The sale opens to the public at 10 a.m. Fill a bag for $5 through 2 p.m. To join, visit rocklinfriends.org.

Storytime At the Station

Rocklin Reads with Author Kiyo Sato,
All Ages. Sunday, October 21 at 2 p.m. at Old St. Mary's Chapel on historic Front Street. The author will discuss her book
Kiyo's Story, A Japanese-American Family's Quest for the American Dream.
