A recent Gallup study found that almost half of all employees have left a job to "get away from their manager at some point in their career."  Skilled employees are any organization's most valued asset; what should organizations do to prevent and mitigate the cost of high turnover?
    Want Better Managers?

No one was born as a manager. In fact most people are promoted to management because they are good at what they do. Usually that means they have strong technical skills whether

 i
n engineering, architecture, sales or HR. Seeing the great job an employee does we decide to promote them based on those skills and want them to provide the organization with continued success by giving them a team. The problem is that we don't always give people the skills they need to be successful managers.

   Train Managers to Manage

It is flattering to get promoted because of success on the job.  New managers want to continue that success but too few organizations give them the time, space and education to learn and grow.We need managers to have the leadership tools and skills they need to effectively manage and develop their people. Unfortunately, good teachers do not always make good principals; doctors don't necessarily make good hospital administrators, engineers do not necessarily make good project managers, and so on.

Coach Managers to Continue Their Growth

However, talented people can be taught the skills to be managers, in areas they didn't have before. One on one coaching is also a great way to further that development. Coaching has been defined (by the International Coach Federation) as "Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential."

T raining and coaching can include a variety of management skills including:
  • Effective communication
  • Clear delegation
  • Giving and receiving behavioural feedback
  • Time management
  • Dealing with difficult behaviour
