UROP RESEARCH MENTOR AWARDS
|
|
|
UROP Faculty Research Mentor Award
Paul
Conway
|
Dr. Paul Conway is an assistant professor in the
Department of Psychology
. He is interested in the psychology of morality and justice, how people think about good and bad, right and wrong, and whether to help or harm others. Congratulations, Dr. Conway!
For her nomination of Dr. Conway, UROP student Kailyn O'Connor wrote,
"I had the wonderful opportunity of running my own experiment and getting first hand experience in the field. He had faith in me to basically run a whole study on my own with his guidance when I had never done anything in research before. Dr. Conway was patient with my [initial] confusion, answered all of my questions and helped me every step of the way."

UROP Post-doc Research Mentor Award
Peter Cheetham
|
Dr. Peter Cheetham was a post-doc and is currently a faculty member working at the
Center for Advanced Power Systems
at FSU. He has hosted several UROP student in his lab over the years including Alexia Mullings, who nominated him for this award! Congratulations, Dr. Cheetham!
Alexia wrote of her time working with Dr. Cheetha
m, "
Dr. Peter Cheetham has demonstrated outstanding guidance and mentoring during my UROP research project by giving me the opportunity to observe projects and experiments that take place at the Center for Advanced Power Systems, even when they do not involve my own research, in order to give me the opportunity to gain more exposure to real life projects and environments that engineers work in."

|
UROP Graduate Student Research Mentor Award
Kate Hill
|
Kate Hill is a PhD student in biological sciences and hosts several UROP students in her lab. Her UROP assistant Elizabeth Campos nominated her for this award. Congratulations, Kate Hill!
Elizabeth wrote of her ment
or, "
Kate Hill has demonstrated outstanding guidance and mentorship through the time of our UROP study. Kate exemplifies the meaning of constant support and dedication to her work and has shown me a new light to the research field. Nia Harmon
President
, Florida Georgia Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation,
UROP Student 2016-2017
|
Nia is currently working on her Honors in the Major thesis research in physical chemistry under the supervision of Dr. Thierry Dubroca at the
National High Magnetic Field Laboratory
. Her research involves studying the dynamics of radicals and the target molecule, carbon-13 tetrachloride, in solution using two techniques: liquid scalar Overhauser dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy.
During her time in UROP, she worked in Dr. Lei Zhu's organic chemistry lab where she synthesized fluorescent dyes used to image zinc (II) in living cells. She also served as vice president of
FGLSAMP
, before serving two terms as president. She spearheaded FGLSAMP's involvement in service through
FSU STEM Day
and the MagLab Open House.
Nia presented her research at the 2017
ACC Meeting of the Minds
and the 2019
National Conference for Undergraduate Researc
h. She is an IDEA Grant recipient, being awarded the 2019 Scott and Ina McNichols Undergraduate Research Award, which will fund her honors thesis research this summer. After she graduates, she plans to earn her PhD in physical chemistry.

Benji Charles was born in Haiti and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and i
s a third year transfer student majoring in computer science.
For the past two semesters, he has conducted research through UROP at the
Research Computing Center
under Paul Van Der Mark, PhD & Prasad Hemantha Maddumage, PhD using FSU’s supercomputer to complete a research project titled “Using Machine Learning to Predict Financial Markets”. He presented his research twice at the
2019 Undergraduate Research Symposium
and at Tallahassee's
MLx19 (Machine Learning Expo 2019)
. He is a member of the FGLSAMP (Florida Georgia Louis Stokes Alliance for Minorities Participation) and Theta Tau: Professional Engineering Fraternity.
He plans to take the GRE and apply to graduate school next year. Benji wants to focus on machine learning and analyzing big data. This summer he will go to Orlando to intern for Lockheed Martin, the largest defense contractor in the world.

Florida State University encourages students to pursue research opportunities in their area of interest.
Experiments done in a laboratory, research conducted in the archives of a library, interviews taken to explore a social or political concern, fieldwork leading to a better understanding of a social or environmental situation, artistic work created, and comparisons of best educational practices are all ways to explore research opportunities.

|
Here are some tips on how to connect to research this summer:
- Identify faculty and students doing research in your field on a department website or through CRE advising.
- Reach out to a professor, post-doc, or graduate student about research they are working on, introduce yourself and your interests
- Set up a time to meet with them, often they are working through the summer and don't have a heavy class load
- Or check out National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates or the the Student Opportunity Center for opportunities outside of FSU.
