Torah Rea ding   1074, 932              Haftarah 1316

SEVENTH DAY OF PASSOVER
God leads the Israelites out of Egypt appearing as a cloud by day and pillar of fire by night. The Egyptians pursue the Israelites to the shore of the Sea of Reeds and appear to have them cornered. The sea parts for the Israelites, who cross through on dry land, but the waters crash down upon Pharaoh's army. Having been saved by God, the Children of Israel break into a song of praise, acclaiming God's victory and affirming their faith in God. Miriam, Moses' sister, leads the women in song and dance. (Our tradition maintains that the seventh day of Passover is when the splitting of the Sea of Reeds occurred.)

The Israelites wander for three days without fresh water. They come to Marah and encounter bitter water there. God tells Moses to throw a branch into the water and it becomes potable. Subsequently, the Israelites complain that they want meat to eat. God sends quail in excessive quantities, and in the morning the Israelites are provided with manna, which will sustain them throughout their years in the wilderness. As the manna does not keep overnight, the people need to gather manna each day, but miraculously, the double portion gathered on Friday remains fresh through Shabbat. At Refidim the Israelites again complain about the lack of fresh water. Moses cries out to God, who tells him to take his rod and strike a rock to produce water.

From the Second Torah Scroll we read of the additional sacrifices which were offered on the concluding days of Passover.

EIGHTH DAY OF PASSOVER

A yearly tithe (ten percent) of all agricultural products must be spent by the farmer at the central religious shrine. The produce itself may be brought or it may be converted into money. Every third year an additional tithe must be distributed among the Levites, strangers, widows and orphans. In order to further assure the economic well-being of the disadvantaged, all loans are cancelled according to a seven-year cycle, and the Torah reminds us to exercise the greatest compassion and generosity when confronted with the plight of the poor. Released slaves are to be rewarded liberally for their loyalty and service. Eradication of poverty is the ideal to which everyone must aspire.

Unblemished, kosher firstborn male animals are to be brought as a sacrifice before God. Their meat is to be consumed by the farmer and his family.

We are reminded to observe the three pilgrimage festivals: Passover, Shavuot and Sukkot.

From the second scroll we read of the sacrifice offered in the Temple on Passover.

The only film record
A few seconds: the only filmed documentation of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. The death of Simcha Rotem (Kazik), the last of the Warsaw Ghetto fighters, has reignited public awareness of one of the Jewish people's greatest episodes of heroism | One of the challenges of commemorating this event is the almost complete lack of visual documentation, which has led many documentary makers to use photographs of other events or staged segments | Today, animation can complete what the Nazis prevented their victims from

May 4 | 4:00 pm, 8:00 - 9:30 pm
The Theater at Gibney @ 280 Broadway
The 2019 EMERGE program features New York City-based choreographers Chanel DaSilva and Bobbi Jene Smith, (Bobbi Gene danced with the Batsheva Dance Company for 10 years and teaches GAGA) alongside the inaugural GDC/Springboard EMERGE Choreographic Award Winner, Los Angeles-based Micaela Taylor.
Each artist will teach classes, offer creative process sessions and dialogues about the future of the dance field, and create a new work on GDC to premiere on a shared evening. EMERGE highlights the continual expansion of GDC's mission: from its beginning 27 years ago as a vehicle for the choreographic vision of its Founder Gina Gibney, to then welcoming re-stagings and new commissions from a wide range of guest choreographers, and now providing visibility, resources, and space to the next generation of creators in the contemporary dance community.
