"Bob's Juror Notes - Part Two - Paint the WOW"
Welcome back to another BobBlast!
As a juror for many annual art competitions in art festivals, exhibitions and awards, I am honored to view 1000s of art works that just aren't interesting. In fact, most are boring.
Consequently, the winners stand out far above everyone else. The winners all have what I call the WOW Factor. You know, that sound you make when you see artwork that stops you in the tracks - your eyes pop out and you say "wow!" Well, all these become the candidates for the awards when I jury.
These paintings are the ones that stop and surprise me. They hold my attention and I keep going back again and again. They're memorable and I can't get them out of my head!
Another way to get attention with your work is to have an original point of view... your own twist at looking and painting. It may be the same old view or subject matter, but painted with your own point of view - your original point of view.
In the previous BobBlast, you may recall I mentioned I was not a fan of only technical skill. Some painters never get past that level. I look for the painter who paints with the fire in the belly - paintings that leave a passionate mark always get my attention.
Next, I note the clarity of the message that the painting conveys. I look at the title. No title? No message and commitment. If your title is confusing, unclear or noncommittal, the painting will be as well.
As I say before beginning a painting, decide what you want. Then make it happen.
And make it a wow!
Below is a list of featured workshops - but did you know that I also offer private sessions in my studio? Perfect for beginners who want a crash course in watercolor or acrylic or for artists who are designing an exhibit and want to bounce ideas for content and techniques. I devote 100% of my studio time to you! Designed for 1 to 3 people - if you are interested or have questions, email kate@robertburridge.com
Thanks again for watching and telling your friends! All my BobBlasts are archived on my
