Work on Tribute Mural along Trail Begins This Week

This black and white rendering by mural artist Larry Crawford will be painted in color on a concrete slope along the Brays Bayou Connector Trail, which follows a Harris county Flood Control channel.

Everyone's favorite mural artist Larry Crawford is at it again, this time tackling his largest work yet, a 100-foot wide by 20-foot tall mural designed as a tribute to Hurricane Harvey rescuers that will be painted on a concrete slope where the Brays Bayou Connector Trail intersects with the Wilcrest Connector Trail. "It seems appropriate to pay tribute to these heroes with art along a flood control channel," Crawford said. "I'm excited to get started."

We'll have more photos tracking Larry's progress in future issues of The Wire. Meanwhile, do you know any Harvey heroes in Westchase District? Who are they? How did they help you or others? Send an email to Jonathan Lowe with all the details and we'll make sure they're invited to a special unveiling of the mural, to take place later this summer.

Land Cleared to Begin Work for Trailside Pocket Park

Last week, work crews cleared overgrown brush and debris from a site located just west of the HCC Campus Trail. Later this summer, the area will feature a trail path connecting the HCC Campus Trail to Hayes Road and will be home to the first park constructed by Westchase District. Expected completion of the project is mid-summer. Amenities to be added later to the landscaped area will include benches, workout equipment and a water fountain.

Noah's Ark Pool Open Now through End of August

Arguably one of Westchase District's most recognizable attractions (at least to families with young kids) is the Noah's Ark Pool, at 10570 Westpark Drive.

A ministry of First United Methodist Church's Quillian Center, the facility is geared to families with toddlers, preschoolers and elementary-school aged children. An ark structure with animals is centered in a shallow pool with three slides, a crawl-through, a mushroom water drop, a rainbow slide and animals spraying water. Quillian Center also features a full-sized swimming pool with dual slides and two diving boards.

Pool hours from May 28 to August 24 are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For holiday hours, as well as prices for admission and concessions, visit their website, or call 713-781-9195.

Thursdays @ 3 p.m.  *Rain or shine* St. Cyril of Alexandria Catholic Church

Peaches are Plentiful This Season at Market

According to the Fredericksburg Convention and Visitor Bureau, the region's peach crop has produced "a bumper early yield and is primed for a strong summer showing."

Fredericksburg, 140 miles southeast of San Angelo, is the Gillespie County seat. Gillespie is the largest peach-producing county in Texas, with more than 1,400 acres in commercial peach production. Come see what all the fuss (fuzz?) is about this week and try some peaches!

Delicious peaches are now in season and for sale this week at the market.

VIDEO: How to Survive an Active Shooter Event

At a recent Public Safety Alliance meeting for Westchase District property managers, HPD's Stephen Daniel shared many practical tips on how YOU should respond if you're ever involved in an active shooter situation. Perhaps most compelling is the idea that you have to control your emotions and have a survivor mindset. If you want to know more, watch HPD's "Run Hide Fight" video online (click image above).
