Applications are now being accepted for the School of Medicine's Cura Personalis Fellowship in Professional Identity Formation and Coaching, a teaching-learning program that allows clinicians to further develop skills in mentorship by facilitating the formation and development of medical students. Faculty and affiliated-faculty physicians may apply here by May 3.

Goodman Appointed to CDC Board of Scientific Counselors

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar has appointed GUMC's Jesse Goodman, MD, MPH, professor of medicine, to the Board of Scientific Counselors for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Office of Infectious Diseases. The term runs through the fall of 2022. Goodman, an infectious disease expert, is director of The Center on Medical Product Access, Safety and Stewardship.

Glasscock Elected National Chair of AAMC Group on Business Affairs

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Group on Business Affairs (GBA) has elected as its national chair-elect, Mary Glasscock, MBA, associate vice president and chief business officer of Georgetown University Medical Center, for 2019-2020. The GBA advances administrative and fiscal management in academic medical institutions to support medical education, research and health care.

Walking Warriors Raise Over $135,000 in Second Annual Walk

Genetic Testing in Women Diagnosed with Breast Cancer Decreases Cost of Care Nationwide

A new study by researchers at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center and the National Cancer Institute, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, suggests that Oncotype DX-guided treatment could reduce the cost for the first year of breast cancer care in the U.S. by about $50 million (about 2 percent of the overall costs in the first year).

Large Federal Program Aimed at Providing Better Health Care Underfunds Primary Care

Findings from a Georgetown-led study found that despite a mandate to help patients make better-informed health care decisions, a 10-year research program established under the Affordable Care Act has funded a relatively small number of studies that examine primary care, the setting where the majority of patients in the U.S. receive treatment.

Rare but Important Gene Target Found in Many Tumor Types, Suggesting New Therapy Possible

A consortium of researchers led by Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center have completed the largest analysis of a new gene fusion they believe is responsible for the development of a wide spectrum of cancer types, discovering that errant gene fusions in neuregulin-1 or NRG1, which are present in about 0.2 percent of existing cancers, can be targeted with existing agents. 

Georgetown Law Names Campus Green Space After Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton

Georgetown Law has dedicated a campus green space known as "Tower Green" to Congresswoman and Professor Emerita Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC). The space will feature a bench and memorial to honor Norton, whose leadership at the University, in the District of Columbia and across the country, was praised by Georgetown University President, John J. DeGioia, Georgetown Law Dean William M. Treanor and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowse, who were all in attendance for the April 23 ceremony.
