Managing Member Inducted to WVSU Foundation


Congratulations to Bailey & Wyant, PLLC Managing Member Charles Bailey on his induction into the West Virginia State University Foundation. 

As a newly inducted member of the Foundation, Mr. Bailey will support the mission of West Virginia State University. Since its inception, the Foundation has arranged scholarship programs, financial aid for needy students, and support for academic, athletic, community and student projects at the University.

Member Elected to WV State Bar Board of Governors

Bailey & Wyant, PLLC Member Mark A. Kepple has been elected to the WV State Bar Board of Governors for District 1, which includes Brooke, Hancock and Ohio counties.
 
Mark A. Kepple is a Member of the law firm of Bailey & Wyant, PLLC's Wheeling office where he practices in general litigation successfully trying cases in Northern West Virginia and Eastern Ohio. His particular interests include litigating personal injury matters, employment and civil rights disputes, consumer actions, product liability cases, construction defects and oil & gas disputes.
 
Among 16 Districts within the state, Mr. Kepple was nominated and elected by his peers in District 1, to represent their interest within WV State Bar meetings. He has been elected to listen to the needs and ideas of his district, bring their concerns to the board and make his recommendations on voting matters.  As a Member of the Board of Governors it is his responsibility to keep District 1 informed on all matters of the WV State Bar, investigate matters that come before the board, and make his recommendations through his voting power. Acting as a liaison for District 1, Mr. Kepple will be a liaison to oversee operations of the WV State Bar, fiducially responsible for the decisions made within his term.
 
Article IV of the WV State Bar Constitution By-Laws states the West Virginia State Bar shall be governed by a board of governors. There shall be a lawyer disciplinary board and a committee on unlawful practice. There shall also be for each state bar district created by the by-laws a committee on grievances. Such board shall select a president, a president elect, a vice president, a executive director and the members of said committees. Such board may from time to time create, alter and terminate other offices and committees, with such powers, authority and duties as it may deem proper. All officers, except the executive director and administrative assistants, and the members of such committees shall be selected with either from membership of such board or from the West Virginia State Bar.
 
The Board of Governors consists of 24 members and currently each elected governor serves a three-year term and is not permitted to succeed themselves. As an agency under the West Virginia Supreme Court, the WV State Board of Governors makes its recommendations to the court within the interests of its constituents.

Bailey & Wyant, PLLC Member, Michael Taylor is Chair of the new  Defense Trial Counsel of West Virginia Government and Political Sub Committee.

Mr. Taylor hosted a Lunch & Learn to welcome attorneys to the newly formed Sub Committee and to discuss the goals and mission of the committee and the practice of representing governmental entities and employees.

Members  Attend WVU Medicine 
Annual Children's Gala

Bailey & Wyant, PLLC Members Jim Marshall and David Schumacher had a wonderful evening in Oz celebrating and supporting the Eastern Panhandle  WVU Medicine East at their Annual Children's Gala 2019.

The black tie event is now in its 2nd year and supports the mission of WVU Medicine along with Berkeley Medical Center and Jefferson Medical Center, which formed a not-for-profit healthcare system for the Eastern Panhandle. With a method of family-centered care, the mission of WVU Medicine East is to improve the health status of Eastern Panhandle residents by providing excellence in health and wellness services, expanding access to care, and participating in the education of healthcare professionals.
Clean-Up Charleston Crew

Our Bailey & Wyant, PLLC team had a great time at Team Clean Up on the East End Saturday.

The team was hard at work on a great stretch of road and collected quite a few bags of trash early Saturday morning.

Clean Up Charleston was announced by Mayor Amy Goodwin and involved volunteers helping around the city every Saturday in April.

Brent D. Benjamin
Brent D. Benjamin is Of Counsel in the firm's Charleston, West Virginia office. 

Benjamin was elected to the West Virginia Supreme Court and spent twelve years on the state's highest court, receiving numerous honors and initiating a number of significant programs including a state-wide Drug Court System, West Virginia's Access to Justice Commission, West Virginia's Domestic Violence Database, and West Virginia's Business Court. His passion for the rights of individuals and protection of those rights in the judicial system allowed him to focus on improving our state's largest problems including domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, mental hygiene, and the West Virginia opioid epidemic.

Benjamin has spent the last two years as a consultant in civil trial and appellate litigation, helping with strategies, writing, issue development and argument preparation. He also brings a successful mediation practice.

As Of Counsel at Bailey & Wyant, PLLC, former-Justice Benjamin's work will emphasize appellate practice & consulting, general and commercial litigation, and alternative dispute resolution. He will continue to prepare and educate attorneys and parties throughout the state with moot court opportunities for oral arguments. He will also assist locally and nationally in law school competitions and will present on a variety of judicial and legal presentation topics.

YWCA Race to End Racism   

It was a beautiful Saturday morning down on the boulevard. No better way to end the month than to participate in a community event! 

Bailey & Wyant, PLLC formed a team to join the YWCA's Race to End Racism on the West Side. 

The YWCA is a pillar of our community, providing core services  to child development, domestic violence services, senior support, homeless services and elimination of racism.
