Continuity of care is the sharing, coordination, and integration of medical information among different providers to support patient care across multiple points in time and multiple care settings.
What does this mean to breastfeeding families and the providers who serve them?

Continuity of Care is not a new topic in the healthcare world. It focuses on reducing negative outcomes such as safety and mortality across many specialties. When we apply this to breastfeeding we can translate this into what creates these gaps of continuity which contribute to less than ideal rates of initiation, exclusivity and duration of breastfeeding and the negative outcomes associated with this. When we develop systems to guarantee continuity of skilled support for lactation between hospitals and health care settings in the community, we support our client's and ourselves in our healthcare work. It both enables us to have an improved relationship with our patients and also allows us to work more effectively and, most importantly, results in improved clinical outcomes.

She assists communities through community analysis, program set up and sustainability planning, partnership development, as well as community engagement strategies for both programmatic and government work in person and online. She has extensive experience with counseling families, clinical lactation work, and training in a variety of environments through curriculum development and program evaluation to create a continuity of care for families throughout communities.

The training will provide resources and connection to a statewide network/coalition for regular updated information and feedback when questions arise. This innovative, interactive training incorporates hands-on practice and role play in Spanish and English. BreastfeedLA's Lactation Consultant Education Course
is an advanced and comprehensive educational course that provides part 2 of the 90 hours as mandated by the IBLCE for certification as a Lactation Consultant. This information will allow graduates to have the background necessary to prepare students to pass the educational components of the IBCLC exam for certification as an IBCLC.
To sit for the IBCLC certification examination, an individual must meet eligibility criteria in three areas: Health Sciences Education, Lactation Specific Education, and Lactation Specific Clinical Experience. This course satisfies one of the three requirements: Lactation Specific Education.

Tricare Adds Coverage for Human Breast Milk, Limits Pump Supplies

CA WIC Association
: For the first time,
Tricare
, the healthcare plan for military personnel, is covering the purchase of human breast milk from an accredited milk bank. The new coverage, which is retroactive to Jan. 1, could save mothers of premature or sick infants thousands of dollars if their baby requires breastmilk but they are unable to provide it. Donor breast milk can be lifesaving for infants born preterm or with a variety of health conditions, but if their mothers are unable to provide it, the costs can be daunting - breast milk purchased without insurance coverage can cost up to $5 an ounce. Under the new Tricare policy, no beneficiary will pay more than about $1.12 per ounce, while many will pay nothing. The new coverage comes with another lactation-related Tricare update, to exclude coverage of "luxury" breast pumps, such as those with smartphone connectivity and expanded rechargeable batteries, and limit coverage of breast pump supply kits to one per birth event.

Jose Gonzalez
Jose Gonzalez attended the University of California in Santa Barbara where he received his bachelor's degrees in Global and International Studies with an emphasis in European and Eurasian studies, Spanish Language and Literature, and Music with an emphasis in Operatic Performance. He joined the breastfeeding community through the social justice aspect when he realized that his breastfeeding friends were not only being harassed in public for feeding their newborn but additionally were not properly accommodated in school or at work. He realized that many workplaces, such as theaters and opera houses, sometimes provide only the bare minimum to accommodate their employees. Being a person that cannot stand for inequities, he decided to speak up against his university and employer to ensure that breastfeeding mothers were properly accommodated. As of now he has lived internationally in Mexico, England, Germany, and China and has observed the vast difference that exists when it comes to breastfeeding, childbirth practices, and paid family leave in each country and culture.

Can Human Breast Milk Reduce Intestinal Injury Following Bone Marrow Transplant?
|
A new pilot study compared the use of human breast milk to formula in children less than 5 years of age who underwent bone marrow transplant (BMT), measuring the levels of inflammatory and pro-inflammatory biomarkers in the stool and blood to assess inflammatory injury to the intestinal microbiome. The results, indicating that human milk was associated with decreased markers of inflammation and injury in the stool, are reported in an article published in
Breastfeeding Medicine
