 :

I hope everyone enjoyed a peaceful and happy Easter and the students enjoyed a restful spring break.

And now it's back to work for the last two months of our school year. We are looking forward to many upcoming events including our May crowning of the Blessed Mother, the 8th grade Science Fair, and our School Spirit Day to name just a few. It will most definitely be a busy next two months.

The students enjoyed a variety of activities and speakers this week centering around how to keep their bodies healthy.  Please see details farther down in this newsletter.  We thank all the parents, agencies, clinicians and instructors who visited our school and shared such important information with our students.

I look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events!

Peace and God's blessing,

Ann E. Dougal

From The Classroom of Mrs. Dean - Grade 2

Grade 2 Welcomes Spring

The second grade students have been eagerly awaiting spring and all that it brings; sunshine, warm weather and flowers. They have been reading about and discussing ways they can be good stewards of our Earth. In addition and as part of the St. Michael's Academy "Good Neighbor Program," the students made door hangers with the message that they are good ecologists.  These door hangers were distrbuted to all of our school neighbors.

The students have also been preparing songs for the May Crowning of The Blessed Mother on Wednesday, May 1st at 2 p.m. and for the May 14th Mass at 9:30 a.m. that they will be hosting.

May is also the time of the year for many of our parishes to celebrate First Holy Communion. Our Catholic students will be receiving this sacrament in their individual parishes. This is a very special time for the students and their families and we wish them well.

We hope you can join us for the May crowning or our 2nd grade Mass.

 From The Nurse's Office

Health Week Great Success!

Wow! Health week...what a fun week to be a School Nurse here at SMA! I may have had more fun than the students! We were busy all week learning how to take great care of the beautiful bodies God gave us. I'm not sure who laughed more, preschoolers or I, when I sneezed green glitter germs on my hands during our hand washing demonstration! Then the kindergarteners, Mrs. Cullen, and I were all laughing as we acted out various emotions and discovered our innate "Super Powers" of regulating our own emotions.

Preschoolers through 2nd graders will now have the cleanest teeth in town thanks to Dental Hygienist Missy Brown and our very own PE teachers! First through 4th graders met with EMTs and were even able to tour an ambulance today, Thanks American Medical Response! Afterwards, our 3rd and 4th graders learned relaxation and grounding techniques from our school counselor. They will also have a visit from Springfield Police Department next week!

And, of course, there was the Health Fair for our 5th through 8th graders! What an amazing opportunity for the students to hear from professionals and local organizations in our community. We thank all of those who volunteered and participated, Springfield Fire Department, Drug Enforcement Administration, Gandara Mental Health Center, Springfield College Art Therapy Department, Westfield State College PE Department, Springfield Parks and Recreation, Nicole Chivas (Nutritionist), Heidi Szalai (Exercise Physiologist) from Baystate Medical Center, The Marceau Family, the Deperry Family, and the Accetta Family.

The students learned about the harmful effects of vaping, nicotine, and drugs. They had an opportunity to put on police vests and fire fighter's equipment! They discussed mental health issues and practiced stress reduction techniques. They learned about healthy food selections and the importance of physical activity. They also received ideas for summer fun from the Springfield Parks and Recreation Department and from local boy and girl scout troops.

And, even though I am slightly relieved that the busyness of health week is wrapping up, inside I am filled with excitement of the possibilities for next year's health week!

 Science Assembly

Boston Science Museum

The 6th grade students were treated to a look at the night time sky by the Boston Science Museum on Wednesday.  How do you view the night time sky during day?  You bring a big, inflatable sky lab with you!

The inflatable sky lab is able to project on the ceiling what the night time sky looks like on any given night, at any given time. Some of the things the students were able to learn about included identifying the constellations, how the earth's rotation affects what you see at night, the difference between locating stars versus planets, what a super novas is and much, much more!

Pictures were difficult because the flash from the camera kept lighting up the lab so you couldn't see the stars and planets on the ceiling!

 Prayer Partners

Thank You Prayer Partners

Did you know that during the season of Lent, everyone at St. Michael's Academy has a prayer partner?  This person includes their partner in their prayers and then celebrates them at Easter with a card.  During this past week, the students and faculty delivered their cards and enjoyed a smile with their partner. It was fun to find out who had been praying for you!

 Kindergarten

Let's Take Care Of Our Earth

To celebrate Earth Day, the 1st grade students were busy this week helping to take care of our earth.  Armed with gloves and plastic bags, the students did their part in helping to keep Nathan Bill Park clean for everyone.

Nice job students!

Last Dance

Shaking and Moving!

Our middle level students held their last dance of the school year on Wednesday. There were plenty of moves on the dance floor!
