Zone 10 Photo Highlight: Elisa Broz
For Elisa, the year is off to a fantastic start with her new horse Volstrups Cody.

“We imported Cody last September from Germany, so he is still a relatively new horse to me,” Elisa shared. “He has a really big heart and I’m very excited to show him this season.”

Cody showed his big heart by jumping beautifully for Elisa during the USHJA Gold Star Clinic – West. The Gold Star Clinic gives riders an opportunity to learn riding and horsemanship from some of the best in the business. This year Kirsten Coe led the mounted sessions which included a flat day, gymnastics day, and Nation’s Cup competition.

“The Gold Star Clinic was such an amazing experience. I really loved it and I recommend it to anyone,” Elisa commented. “There were so many topics that we learned about that I loved – from barn management, young horses, and of course all of the amazing training from Kirsten Coe. One of my biggest takeaways from the clinic was the importance of having a strong team because if you do, then you have a winning team.”

Elisa hopes to take these lessons and apply them to the rest of the show year.

“My goals this year are to move up into the 1.40s and to try and qualify for the FEI Jumping North American Youth Championship and the Platinum Jumper Championships. I also hope to do some big medals back east with my equitation horse Clooney 62.”

It’s All about the Basics

The Gold Star Clinics this month focus on the foundations of hunter/jumper riding: the rider’s position, flatwork, and gymnastics to build the skills you and your horse need for riding courses.

USET Show Jumping Coach Bertalan de Némethy was a strong proponent of gymnastics, including cavalletti work, in the USET training sessions at Gladstone. USET Captain and Olympian Bill Steinkraus stresses the value of cavalletti (or simple poles on the ground) in his 1987 book Reflections on Riding and Jumping: Trotting a single rail, adding a second, then a third, then a double space to a rail (where later you can build a small fence) “enables you to practice the same move over and over until you groove it, and to work on pure technique. It also enables you to work on particular problems, and can be adapted to isolate almost any weakness.”
