Conference Brings 140 to Jackson
A lively crawfish boil, a variety of educational speakers and student/resident energy combined to make the Spring Conference a big success April 12-14 in Jackson.
CME topics ranged from the very general (dermatology) to the very specific (sickle cell disease), and dozens of family physicians attended Saturday and Sunday sessions in order to learn the latest topics and techniques. There were 18 exhibit booths that added to the fun.
Saturday's session was held concurrently with the Spring Fling for residents and students, a day of free speakers and workshops just for family medicine residents and medical students. More than 100 residents and students gave up their Saturday in order to attend. They learned from some of the best family physicians at sessions like Real-Life Hero Training and How to Be a Rock Star Doctor. They also learned different aspects of being a physician at the Contract Negotiation, Debt Reduction and Value-Based Care sessions.

Remembering Dr. "Bunny" Gillis
Dr. Wilfred Reginald "Bunny" Gillis, founding chair of the University of Mississippi Medical Center, passed away April 1 at the age of 82 in his native Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Dr. Gillis |
Dr. Gillis was a native of Canada and earned his medical degree from Dalhousie University. After working in private practice early in his career, he was recruited to Mississippi as the first chair of the UMMC Department of Family Medicine. He was instrumental in establishing the department as a University-based program with community experiences for residents and medical students, including community family medicine clinics and training centers.
Dr. Gillis is survived by his wife and eight children. A celebration of life will be held at a later date, and the family asks that any desired contributions be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation at
www.davisonfh.com.
