Library Mural Continues to Inspire

Since we celebrated its conclusion a year ago, many people have been delighted and inspired by artist Margot Datz's marine mural in the Children's Room of our library.
Recently, ceramicist Frank Creney, property manager at Featherstone Center for the Arts and a friend of Margot, surprised the library with an amazing gift -- he's posing with it above.
At more than 15 inches tall, it's an homage and companion piece to Margot Datz's mural, executed in porcelain with hundreds of fish carved into it and a menagerie of marine creatures sculpted and painted on its surface. He has fitted the egg-shaped creation with dozens of LED lights, and when they glow from inside, the effect is magical.

On another front, the Friends of the Edgartown Library have also been inspired by the mural to create three beautiful sets of 4-inch beverage coasters featuring colorful creatures from Margot's painting. These coasters are offered for sale now, and will be available at the Friends of the Library's Open House on Pink and Green Weekend -- Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Open House held by the Friends of the Edgartown Library, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, will feature a spring plant sale (all plants donated by Donaroma's), a sale of beautiful beverage coasters featuring the art of Margot Datz, and a raffle.

Join the Cult:
Film Series Continues in May
Our eight-film
series, extending into May, features films that have achieved cult status -- each with a fiercely devoted audience, many with recognizable catch-phrases now embedded in the matrix of our language.
These programs are for adults only.
King of Hearts
7 p.m. Wednesday, May 1
Though it flopped in its native France, the film became a cult sensation when it premiered in the U.S. amidst the burgeoning anti-war movement of the late 1960s. Now a world-wide favorite, it's one of director Philippe de Broca's most memorable films. (FR, 1965)
This Is Spinal Tap
7 p.m. Wednesday, May 8
A "mockumentary," this film's cult status is evident by how many of its lines have entered into our everyday lexicon. Just one of them from the character Nigel Tufnel, "turned up to 11," is enough to get members of the Spinal Tap cult trading catch phrases. Director Rob Reiner's first film remains one of the funniest movies of the 1980s. (US, 1984)

This documentary by filmmaker Tom Volf tells the life story of the legendary Greek/American opera singer completely in her own words.Through performances, TV interviews, home movies, family photographs, private letters and unpublished memoirs, the film reveals the essence of an extraordinary woman who rose from humble beginnings in New York City to become a glamorous international superstar and one of the greatest artists of all time. Adventures in Slow Cooking
Season Series Concludes:
1 p.m. Tuesday, May 7
Our final
slow cooking demonstration of the season will feature two light and tasty dishes that you'll want to keep in your summer recipe arsenal, Asian Chicken Lettuce Rolls and Green Curry Meatballs. Either of these dishes can be served as a main dish, an appetizer, or as party food. Best of all, by preparing them in the slow cooker you won't need to crank up the oven and turn your kitchen into a sauna. Come learn the method and stick around to taste the delicious results.

Genealogy Course in May
Three Monday Classes at Three Libraries:
The Martha's Vineyard Library Association presents a three-part Family History Course, meeting from 1 to 3 p.m. on three Mondays in May. This course will be led by Dr. David Martin of the Cape Cod Genealogical Society.

Monday, May 6 - West Tisbury Library
General Introduction to Genealogy: covering how to find vital records, church records, using the Internet for research, recordkeeping, wills, land deeds, city directories, and more.
Monday, May 13 - Edgartown Library
Immigration and Migration for Genealogists: covering immigration trends to the USA, places of origin, migration trends across the USA, passenger lists, naturalization, and more.
Monday, May 20 - Vineyard Haven Library
Using the Census for Genealogical Research: covering the different kinds of Federal censuses (population, agricultural, manufacturing, etc.), state censuses, how to find and collect useful information for family histories, and more.

Fourth Annual Mini Maker Faire Is Program

The Martha's Vineyard Library Association presents the fourth annual Martha's Vineyard Mini Maker Faire, a program showcasing amazing work of all kinds from Vineyard makers of all ages. Anyone who embraces the do-it-yourself (or do-it-together) spirit and wants to share their accomplishments with an appreciative audience is invited to participate in this event.

Martha's Vineyard Mediation Program
Landlord-Tenant Panel Discussion & Presentation
Tuesday, May 21,
5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
MV Mediation Program will sponsor a panel discussion and presentation on landlord- tenant issues, with a question and answer session to follow.
Panelists include Michael Pierce, Esq. an attorney specializing in landlord-tenant questions on Cape Cod and the Island, Raymond Yox, Managing Attorney for the non-profit South Coastal Counties Legal Services, Inc., Matt Poole, Health Agent for the Town of Edgartown, and Sara Barnes, MV Mediation Program's Lead Mediator and Conflict Coach.

Healthy Food Distribution
Friday, May 24, from noon to 2 p.m.
The Martha's Vineyard Vegan Society will have its final Healthy Foods Giveaway Day of the season at the library from noon to 2 p.m. on Friday, May 24. Come enjoy a healthy snack and grab a bag of fresh fruits and vegetables, free of charge.
The giveaway is to promote healthy, plant-based diets on-Island. Members of the society will be here to answer any food-related questions and chat about veganism. One bag per adult, while supplies last.

Special Screening of Taking Root:
The Vision of Wangari Maathai
Saturday, May 25 at 2:30 p.m.
The documentary, Taking Root, tells the remarkable story of the Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai whose simple act of planting trees bloomed into a nationwide movement to safeguard the environment, protect human rights, and defend democracy.
After the screening, filmmakers Alan Dater and Lisa Merton will be interviewed by Reverend Margaret Bullitt-Jonas and Jana Bertkau, focusing on Maathai's "Green Belt Movement." Bullitt-Jonas-- Episcopal priest, author, and climate activist-- will share the faith community's response to the climate crisis.
Edgartown Library co-sponsors this program with the Green Team of the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury, Grace Church, and the Polly Hill Arboretum. All are welcome.

Young Adult Board Game Night, led by Tom, continues every Tuesday this month. Get all the gaming fun without the digital daze that comes with video games.
We have classics, as well as some great new games. We'll also provide snacks, because gamers need to eat, too.

4-5 p.m. Wednesday, May 8
The Young Adult Art Club, led by Morgan, is a program for the 12-and-up crowd, focusing on different art media every month. In May, kids will continue to explore using different types of paint.
Sign-up is required, so we can be sure to have enough materials on hand.

 Young Adult Book Group
This month's book for discussion, led by Morgan, is One of Us Is Lying, a debut novel from Karen McManus that serves up thrills and mystery in the setting of high school detention. Writes Kirkus Reviews: "This fast-paced blend of Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, and classic John Hughes will leave readers racing to the finish as the try to unravel the mystery on their own."

Fridays at 10:30 a.m. -- Toddler Story Time
This story time is offered in collaboration with the Family Center and its Discovery Days program.
Saturdays at 3:30 p.m. -- Portuguese Story Hour
Join us for stories in Portuguese geared toward preschool children.
Crafts and Play Groups
Tuesdays, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. -- Open Paint Group
Come use our collection of finger paints and assorted brushes, paint and dot art.
Children under 9 must be accompanied by an adult.
Tuesdays, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. -- Radio Games
Radio Games with Laurel Redington of MVY Radio is an after-school program created to engage middle schoolers with each other and foster effective communication. The goal is to encourage imagination, conversation, empathy, creativity, and individuality. All middle schoolers are welcome to join! This program is made possible by a grant from the Cape Cod 5 Foundation.

On this weekend of Mother's Day, enjoy a free Mom & Me paint class led by Collette Jordan. We will provide the materials and light refreshments will be served.
Registration is required, and each spot is limited to one mom plus one child (age 9 and up); please call the library to sign up.
Drop-in Mother's Day Crafts

Calling all toddlers! Come play with all of our lawn games and try out our obstacle course and fun games. Best of all, the Edgartown Fire Department will swing by with a truck for kids to explore at 11 a.m.
This program is geared toward toddlers, but all are welcome. Children under 9 must be accompanied by an adult.
Please note: This is an outdoor event. Call the library for information if the weather looks questionable that morning.
