THE LAA IS PROUD TO INTRODUCE
MICHAEL REIBEL
ITS 2019 SPRING ART SHOW'S JUDGE
Born in 1964 and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Michael's earliest recollection of creating art was at the age of 5 during a summer art camp at the J.B. Speed Museum of Art in Louisville. While he began his professional artistic journey later in life than many contemporary painters, he is living proof that it is never too late to pursue a talent, a dream, or a passion. In 2010, he made the decision to leave his corporate day job and solely focus on his fine art career, a decision many viewed as "gutsy", however one that was driven by his passion and desire to continue growing as an artist.

Michael has always been drawn to the outdoors and the natural beauty of the landscape. As a young boy, he has vivid memories of riding at the front of his uncle's boat before sunrise heading out on the lake to fish in a setting of solitude and peacefulness found in the early morning light. The sensory elements of nature are a moving and inspirational experience each and every time he ventures out in search of material for future paintings.  The stillness and quietness of the landscape often provide the inspiration for many of his works.

Michael loves the patina and history of the south, so much so that he and his family relocated to Seabrook, South Carolina in 2016. The majority of his work is of the southern landscape, however he also enjoys still life and figurative work. He is a contemporary abstract impressionist painter working in oils. He has a strong belief in drawing and painting from life. He believes painting a variety of subject matter sharpens his skills and ultimately makes him a better painter.

In his view, today's technologies afford painters a multitude of useful tools, however without the experience of working from life, a painter's work may not develop to its fullest potential or vision. There are attributes of landscape painting that cannot always be painted from life. Michael uses a variety of techniques and strategies in the studio that would not be possible outdoors.

Conversely, nothing can replicate the freshness of plein aire work. It is often raw and loose, as decisions must be made quickly and decisively with the ever-changing pattern of light. His goal is to use all of these variables to create paintings that tap the emotions, experiences and memories of the viewer.

General Meeting Tuesday, April 16

Environmentalist/Artist Lisa D.Watson Speaking to LAA in April
Saving the Planet One Garden at a Time

Carol Otto Cole

Are you a gardening guru, the property owner whose efficient, effortless landscaping design is so breathtaking that drive-bys create a log jam as they crane their necks to admire it, or are you  envious of those green thumbs in an area where you feel decidedly deficient with every new planting season? Just in time for Earth Day, the LAA brings artist and activist Lisa D. Watson to speak about her sustainable art practice, the inspiration for her artwork, upcoming projects and how all of this relates to her garden design business.

Since 1992, Watson has freelanced as an eco-conscious artist, designer, film production art director and scenic painter. She approaches every project focusing on sustainability, reflecting her connection to the environment through its themes and through the use of various reclaimed materials. Her recent solo show at the Jepson Center and recently finished at GSU-Armstrong's Fine Arts Gallery,  Avanguardia , explores the disconnect inherent in how we explore the natural world from the window of a car-bringing balance between urbanization and conservation in her work.  Convergence  (pictured) is constructed on reclaimed wood from such miscellaneous recycled materials as concrete, security envelopes and nail polish, and is among the selected few pieces to be chosen for the Jepson's permanent collection.

An environmental activist originally from Canton, Ohio, Watson has been involved locally with projects such as the Talmadge Bridge renaming effort and the transformation of the area under the I-16 overpass at MLK Blvd, to make it more pedestrian and environmentally friendly. "I can't go anywhere without thinking, 'how can I improve this?' " she says, hoping to create a beautiful park underneath with murals that accentuate, rather than detract from the area.   Watson's website, art-ldw.com, although up-to-date and thorough, provides but an abbreviated summary of this full-purposed life, complete with a treasure trove of paintings, projects, numerous published articles, infinite solo and group exhibition listings, and humorous anecdotes.  From her blog: "Lisa D. Watson starts her day with a delicious cup of coffee ground from the bones of litterbugs and animal abusers. She is an upcycling mixed-media artist, muralist, home decorator, garden designer and now needs a second cup of coffee".

As the owner of Plan It Green Design, Watson consults clients with outdoor living spaces, native and drought tolerant garden design. If you haven't already become an expert on your back yard - where does the water drain? Where does it pool? - or developed a love affair with rubble, this is an evening you don't want to miss. (That pile of discarded aggregate isn't junk, it's your new hardscape! Recycled materials like brick, stone, lumber and even metal can enjoy a new life as walkways, decks and patios.)  Feel free to bring pictures of your own unique problem areas and enlist Watson to help you focus on plants that will thrive by incorporating water-wise and environmentally-conscious plants into your design.

The Landings Art Association welcomes anyone interested in attending ($3 guest fee), at the Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church, Tuesday, April 16.   Come at 6:30 to munch and mingle, followed by the general meeting at 7, and then our guest speaker.  For information about LAA, visit  www.landingsart.com  or contact Pam Reynolds, Membership Chair at  drpamr@gmail.com .

April Artists of the Month

The Landings Art Association
Announces its
April 2019 Art Exhibit
featuring the works of

Sandra T. Colquitt

LAA Plantation Gallery
April 4 - May 7

Opening Reception Thursday, April 4, 2019
5:00 - 6:30 p.m.

The Landings Art Association will present the work of noted portrait artist Sandra T. Colquitt, on Thursday, April 4, beginning with a 5:00 p.m. reception in The Plantation Club Gallery.

A native of Savannah, Georgia, Sandra holds a B.F.A. degree in Painting from the University of Georgia, and has studied with master portrait instructors throughout the country, such as Bettina Steinke, Daniel Greene, John Howard Sanden, Michael Shane Neal, and others.

Sandra's portraits embody realism in the classical tradition. An exact likeness of the subject is conveyed in her portraits, which also portray the spirit and sense of presence of the individual in a sensitive and dignified manner. She achieves this through her extensive knowledge of the craft of painting, and over twenty-five years of experience in the field of portraiture.

Specializing in oil portraiture, Sandra's subjects range from children and families to personalities in the academic, institutional, and business worlds. Of her work, Sandra states, "The challenge of portraying the human face and form has always been a special fascination. The likeness must be exact and the painting must have sound design elements to make a beautiful and strong work of art. I love being an artist and God has blessed me with the ability to record His creations through the medium of paint." In addition to her portrait paintings, Sandra's show will also include examples of her portrait drawings and still life paintings.

Sandra has received many awards. Among those, she was chosen twice as a finalist in the Annual Artist's Magazine International Portrait Competition. She is a member of the Portrait Society of America, The Portrait Institute of New York, and is a Member of Merit of The Portrait Society of Atlanta.

Sandra's work is much sought after, and is represented in public and private collections over the Southeast. Recently, she has completed portrait works for the public collections of the Georgia Ports Authority and Armstrong-Atlantic State University. She maintains a studio on Dutch Island in Savannah, Georgia.

You can learn more about the artist on her website at SandraColquittPortraits.com. Sandra can be contacted at scolqportraits@gmail.com or (912) 352-7565.

Landings Company Event - March and April

Karen Macek
Working in oil and acrylic

"Point of View" is a body of work expressing the artist's interpretation of the ever-changing vistas across the Lowcountry marshes.  Some of the work are layered glazes applied with a rag brush, some are a mixture of oil and cold wax applied with palette knife, and others are sweeping brush strokes.
Inspired by her environment and her travels, Karen's paintings utilize vivid color and expressive brush and knife technique--
".... shifting skies, from marsh to desert, shadows and reflections of everyday life; contrasts and colors seem more intense as I put paint to canvas.
"Everything about the process of painting excites me.  It is a conversation between my brush, my canvas, and my paints that continues to explore the nuances of expression and challenge. Once I get involved in the work, I simply lose track of time. I love it when a piece almost paints itself."
