MCA Denver is excited to announce that Arthur Jafa’s video Love Is The Message, The Message Is Death (2016) will be on view in its Whole Room Gallery this winter. A montage of footage sourced primarily from the internet and set to Kanye West’s “Ultralight Beam,” the video expresses the fraught reality of black life in contemporary America.
An innovator of black cinema, Jafa is adept at capturing moving images of black America and, in many cases, pairing them with music for greater impact. Love Is The Message epitomizes this effect. The video employs gospel and hip-hop aesthetics to elicit a visceral response. Syncopated YouTube and World Star clips alternately depict black celebrities and anonymous figures in moments of joy and pain: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. waves from the back of a convertible; Walter Scott runs from a police officer and falls to his knees when he is shot in the back; young men and women juke in clubs and at house parties; two heavy bodies move slowly through waist-high floodwater; Mahalia Jackson belts a gospel solo; and, at his father’s direction, a little boy practices being held up by police. Edited together, these images alternately seduce and shake. They show black bodies performing the acts for which they are celebrated and fetishized and others for which they are mocked, cruelly stereotyped, and illogically punished. The artist’s montage envelopes the viewer in a visual and aural spectacle—a moving exaltation of achievement and resilience.

ComedySportz, the ingenious improv show that pits two teams of quick-witted performers against each other in a balls-to-the-wall battle for comedy supremacy, has been around for 30 years -- which is long enough for it to have its own abbreviation (CSz) and tons of famous alumni, including Wayne Brady (Whose Line Is It Anyway?, Let's Make A Deal) and Jason Sudeikis (SNL, Horrible Bosses). Now coming to the Avenue Theater in the Mile-High City, it works like this -- you and your fellow audience members provide suggestions to each squad, who throw down by coming up with scenes, bits and songs on the spot. Each show includes up to a dozen different improv games, out of a list of more than 100. A referee oversees the action, calling fouls (groan-worthy puns'll get you a flag) and keeping score. Yep, there are points and everything -- but the power to bestow winners and losers is ultimately in your hands. It's no laughing matter, except for the fact that it definitely is.

Apparate Over for a Night of Magic!
Send out your owls! Hogwarts has been rebuilt and the future generations of magical children are all excited for a year at Hogwarts.
He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has been destroyed, there surely is no evil left to threaten the Heirs of Hogwarts... or is there?
Experience a loving homage to the world of Harry Potter. With completely improvised story lines, this is a heartfelt send-up to the universe created by J.K. Rowling and is the only Harry Potter themed improv show in Denver. Imagine a love letter in the form of spoof, and that’s what witches, wizards and muggles will be enjoying Friday Nights at 8:00 p.m. at the Bovine Metropolis Theater.
And just like a Bag of Bertie Bott’s every flavored beans, “Anything can happen,” says Gryffindor and Dramaturg, Kent Welborn. “In improv anything can happen, and then in the magical world of Harry Potter anything can happen double.”
All the things you love about the Harry Potter universe will be displayed on stage: charms, Hogwarts houses, transfiguration, and magical creatures. Returning to Hogwarts has never been this funny. “Heirs of Hogwarts: An Improvised Adventure” is a loving fan-fiction parody of an entire year at Hogwarts.
Expect, “Magic,” says Welborn.

When Rivalry Ignites Collaboration
The way to win Season 9 of Denver's Next Improv Star? Support your opponent. This seeming contradiction is at the heart of improv theater and a skill that every winner must demonstrate.
When you come to see this show you get to watch players collaborate to accomplish each week’s challenge, meanwhile competing to win the grand prize and title of Denver’s Next Improv Star. Without any preparation, contestants are thrown into a variety of games and situations and asked to complete specific tasks, like create an improv musical. The result is an unpredictable blend of comedy and drama.
Players are judged on creativity, improv skills, comedic timing, stage presence and a special focus on the expertise of that week’s Guest Judge. Every week Judges eliminate one contestant, while the others vie for prizes, like restaurant gift cards, theater tickets and indoor skydiving party packages, and the grand prize--being named Denver’s Next Improv Star.

Tootie Heath Trio feat. Emmet Cohen: Masters Legacy Series
The younger brother of Percy and Jimmy Heath, Albert "Tootie" Heath has long been a powerful force in the creation of American music. As a teen he shared the bandstand with Thelonious Monk and Lester Young, and upon moving to New York in 1957, made his recording debut with John Coltrane. Mr. Heath's personality and musicianship embody heightened intelligence, sophistication, and soul, and his drumming tells us that the heartbeat of jazz still oversees the spirit and conscience of American freedom. Now in his mid-eighties, he has chosen to unite with young titans Emmet Cohen (piano) and Russell Hall (bass). This unique collaboration is a rare moment in contemporary jazz; a "passing of the torch," that helps render this music forever modern. The trio anticipates their upcoming release as part of Emmet Cohen's
Masters Legacy Series Vol 3 featuring Benny Golson and Tootie Heath

The first time you run this event, you'll establish a base time for yourself. This base time is used to generate a handicap time. The handicap time is calculated using an algorithm developed by Bob Royse, and it's geared to favor a beginning runner and the slower runners.
for an explanation of the handicap algorithm.
Once you have an established handicap, you are racing against your handicap time. The person who improves the most from their handicap time is the winner. Each month the results are sent off to Bob Royse and he fires up his Nielson algorithm and regenerates all of the handicap times based on the latest result data.
As mentioned before, the handicap does favor a beginning runner or a slower runner who is putting in a lot of quality training time, as it's these types of runners who tend to have significant time improvements running the same course. But the race is also good for established runners and the swift of feet because it gives those runners a good indication of their fitness level. It's the same 2 mile course each month. Thus given similar weather conditions, you have a very good basis to check out your running fitness from month to month.
