Principal's Message

It is officially our last week of the school year! As our year comes to a close we are celebrating all that we have accomplished. This past month we had our school color run, carnival, field day, Champions Day, and several field trips. We are ending the year with an awards ceremony and class parties. Please take time to look through the Glendening photo gallery to see all the fun we had this month and throughout the 2017-18 school year.

We wish you all a safe and fun summer.

Digital Artwork at Glendening

Students are not only using computers in their ELA and math class but they are using them in art too!
Ms. Stauffer-Miller shares the work students have been doing in her class. They are learning the art standards while applying technical skills that will help them become college and career ready.

2nd Grade has been working on creating their digital portfolio.  They have learned how to use their camera tool on their Chromebook to document their work, save files in a cloud based system and upload files for review.  We have played a game all year called "Selfie Survival." The first time only a handful of students were able to complete all of the steps and now every student is able to complete the multi-step process.  These will be skills they can carry on with them in future years!

3rd Grade has been using Google Classroom to learn about artworks and respond to questions posed by Mrs. Stauffer-Miller about specific artworks.  Most recently they have created their first completely digital artwork after learning about Andy Warhol's portraits. They had to: 1.) use the camera tool and save the file in the cloud based system, 2.) open and manipulate the file in Pixlr Editor by cropping, resizing, copy and pasting, and adjust the color, and finally 3.) save their artwork and upload it to Google Classroom for review.  The third grade students did an amazing job referring to the posted tutorials when needed or collaborating with their peers to solve problems they ran in to.

4th grade students also have used the Google Classroom platform to discover new artists and respond to questions posed about technique, style, and artists' background.  After learning about the Columbus native Aminah Robinson and her focus on community, students created completely digital artworks about a community they are a part of. Students learned how to : 1.) Create a digital collage and document it by taking a screenshot on their Chromebooks 2.) Save the file on the cloud-based system 3.) Open the file in Pixlr Editor to crop unwanted edges, and 4.) Upload the finished product to Google Classroom for review.

5th Grade students have been utilizing Google Classroom to research, respond to, and share artwork.  They learned about a current artist named Kehinde Wiley who created large scale portraits in contrast to large scale historical portraits of the wealthy.  Students created a digital

self-portrait by 1.) using their camera tool to take a selfie in an expressive pose,  2.) creating a background using digital art making software using tools to cut their image and superimpose with layers on the background they created, and 4.) Save and upload their completed artwork to Classroom for review.  These skills are tools that students will be able to use, build on, and apply in new ways in their education. I am proud of them for persevering and seeing through this challenging project to the end! The 1:1 initiative has not only opened the availability of immediate information for students.  It has also opened a new realm of creative applications for our young learners and thinkers. Students are comfortable and familiar with technology and excited to learn tools alongside their instructors. If Mrs. Stauffer-Miller runs into "technical difficulties" she offers a reward to the first student who can solve the problem and often times students are able to find solutions on their own and share them with the class.
ProgressBook

Parents, be sure to use the free online service that is available to track your child's classroom assignments, grades, attendance, and assessment results. By using ProgressBook you will have a clear picture of your child's overall academic performance. If you are not already using ProgressBook, you should
definitely do so, as the District will be changing how interim reports will be issued in the upcoming year for K-8 students, and beginning January 2018 for high school.

Growth Mindset Quote

"IF THERE IS NO STRUGGLE, THERE IS NO PROGRESS."
 - Frederick Douglass

Here at Glendening we feel it is important to have a growth mindset. We will share inspirational quotes to keep us focused on reaching higher levels of achievement.

What is a growth mindset? "In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work-brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment," Carol Dweck.
