HIGHLIGHTS

Prescribers have little guidance available on opioids, and overprescribing is a widespread problem that contributes to the opioid epidemic currently claiming 130 American lives every day. With up to 92% of patients having leftover opioids after common operations, millions of pills are left vulnerable to diversion into communities.

There's been great advancement in the diagnosis, care, and prevention of concussions in recent years. But there is more to learn about long-term effects and who is more prone to suffer them. In this episode of Michigan Minds, Steven Broglio, Ph.D., A.T.C. director of the Michigan Concussion Center, talks about how the center aims to answer those questions.

People living with multimorbidity, or the coexistence of several chronic conditions, generally have poorer health outcomes, poorer health-related quality of life, and more complex healthcare needs. Melissa Wei, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., assistant professor of internal medicine, discusses her recent study that found that multimorbidity was linked to an increased risk of death by suicide and worse mental health-related quality of life.

How exactly do high-deductible health plans (HDHPs) work, and what does research show about how the individuals they cover use healthcare services? IHPI's Jeffrey Kullgren, M.D., M.P.H., M.S., an internal medicine physician and healthcare researcher at the U-M Medical School, explains these increasingly popular plans.

David Hanauer, M.D., M.S., has been awarded the designation of Fellow of the American Medical Informatics Association (FAMIA). AMIA is the primary medical informatics organization in the U.S.

Findings from the National Poll on Healthy Aging show that pet ownership helps older adults cope with mental and physical health issues, connect with others, and get exercise. And according to authors Cathleen Connell, Ph.D., M.S., Mary Janevic, Ph.D., M.P.H., and Preeti Malani, M.D., M.S., M.S.J., while pets come with benefits, they can also bring concerns, and some people may even put their animals' needs ahead of their own health.

Hospitals have put a lot of effort into encouraging good hand hygiene among their staff. But new findings from a research team led by Lona Mody, M.D., M.Sc., reveal multidrug resistant organisms on patients' hands and the hospital room objects they touch often need expanded efforts to prevent transmission.

Excerpt from Health Affairs Blog by authors Calista Harbaugh, M.D., Preeti Malani, M.D., M.S., M.S.J., Rebecca Haffajee, Ph.D., M.P.H., J.D., and Jennifer Waljee, M.D., M.P.H., M.S.: In the United States, nearly 66 million individuals experience acute pain from a surgery or procedure each year.

Standardizing measurement of the physical, social, and emotional effects experienced by caregivers of people with Traumatic Brain Injury could lead to better support for an overlooked group according to a new study led by Noelle Carlozzi, Ph.D.

A new brief, the product of an IHPI Policy Sprint led by Michelle Moniz, M.D., M.Sc., F.A.C.O.G., examines approaches that states are taking to restrict access to short-term health plans, which offer limited benefits and do not cover maternity care.
