The Poetry of Ecstasy
Rev. Thom Belote, preaching

Each May, Rev. Thom leads a Service dedicated to poetry. This year, the poems he has selected - from Rumi, Walt Whitman, Mary Oliver and others - deal with the common theme of ecstatic experience. The 9:15 service will be held, weather permitting, at Memorial Rock Amphitheater.

ONE SERVICE AT 10:30
After the Good News
Rev. Thom Belote, preaching

The title of this Service comes from the title of a brand new book of theology by Unitarian Universalist minister, Rev. Nancy McDonald-Ladd. Her book presents an important challenge to progressive religious views about human nature.

MUSIC NEWS
by Glenn Mehrbach, Music Director
FROM CHURCH TO TANGO
On Friday, May 3rd, at 8pm, the Music Team will present a very special concert in the Sanctuary, in advance of our presentation of Misa a Buenos Aires for Choir Sunday on May 5th. It's a unique musical program called
FROM CHURCH TO TANGO with Alejandro Pinzon, Master of the Bandoneon, and Glenn Mehrbach, piano.

Alejandro Pinzon was born and raised in Mérida (Yucatán, México) and now based in Pittsburgh. He is a multidisciplinary artist and educator specializing in Argentinian tango. An orchestra conductor, tango dancer, bandoneon and violin player and lecturer, Maestro Tango will present some of the great masterpieces of Tango in a one-of-a-kind performance with Community Church Music Director and pianist, Glenn Mehrbach. Suggested donation $15.

Tango dancers welcome. Alejandro will be happy to make you part of the performance.

VERY SPECIAL CHOIR SUNDAY, MAY 5:
MISA A BUENOS AIRES

For both services on May 5th, the Community Church Choir will be joined by Alejandro Pinzon on Bandoneon, along with church pianist Ariadna Nacianceno, bassist Marc Alperin and a string quartet to bring to life Misa a Buenos Aires by Martin Palmieri (also know as Misatango, or Tango Mass). Your choir has been hard at work mastering the seductive rhythms, thrilling dynamics, and delicious counterpoint of this deeply affecting work. And, the Mezzo Soprano solos will be split among 7 women of the choir. Using the standard Latin text, composer Palmieri brings the spirit of the Argentinian tango to the classic Mass form, reinventing fugues, counterpoint and text painting in completely original ways. It is not to be missed.

ART IN THE SANCTUARY
Rock, Water, Tree
Art by Joan Meade in the Sanctuary, May 5-June 30
Reception in the Commons, Sunday, May 19, 2:30-4:30

Joan's passion is for the natural world and she uses sculptural acrylics to create a three-dimensional effect in her work. Her travel has inspired her to represent landscapes and seascapes enhanced by her imagination. She has exhibited widely across the Southeast and in New Mexico, participating in local and national juried shows, and her paintings are in many private and public collections across the US and abroad.
WORSHIP MINISTRY
A GENTLE REMINDER We reserve a time each week during Sunday Services for the sharing of personal joys and sorrows. This is not a time for announcements or political statements, or a time to go into great detail. Please share your heartfelt joy or sorrow briefly so the service will not run overtime. It's important our Services end at the same time as the children's Religious Education. Respecting these guidelines will insure that Joys and Sorrows during Service can continue. Questions? Contact Ruth Leopold.

BUILDING PROJECT
BUILDING PROJECT UPDATE - PHASE I

With the tenant preschool's settled departure on June 21, we are getting ready to actually launch PHASE I of the Building Project - fixing up the existing space in the Jones Building! We have a plan for getting those six rooms completed and ready for use before September's new wave of classes and meetings.

All we need is lots of willing (not necessarily experienced) volunteers to work one or more shifts in July-August, supervised by experienced Building & Grounds Team members.

Everybody is invited to be part of this church-wide endeavor benefiting virtually all congregants who either participate directly in church activities (e.g. covenant groups, adult and child Religious Education, fellowship and service gatherings, committee and other meetings) or enjoy being in a church community where these activities thrive.

A menu of specific volunteer opportunities will become available later in May. Interim updates may be found on the Building Project webpage.
JUSTICE & SERVICE
ECO'S ENVIRONMENTAL CORNER
First Sunday Recyclables
May 5 at the ECO table: Cell phones (including chargers). As every month, ECO is also collecting batteries (AAA - D, button, rechargeable), corks (natural and synthetic), and tiny bits of metal (paper clips, nails, screws, etc.). You can also find helpful information at the table, including information on Clean Path 2025, NCWARN's plan to make our state's electricity 100% renewable by 2030.

ECO thanks everyone who participated in our many Earth month activities in April. We hope you found them to be educational and useful and that you are motivated to help our Earth every month!

Special thanks to those who participated in the Drawdown EcoChallenge. Unfortunately our friendly rival, ERUUF, managed to pull off a win - 9,299 to 7,999. But the Community Church did great, with 39 participants, and we helped our planet!

SHARE THE PLATE
SHARE THE PLATE SUNDAYS APPLICATIONS DEADLINE MAY 12!! The Share the Plate (STP) Steering Committee is now accepting applications for STP Sunday Collections for the period of July 1-December 31, 2019. Jill Baker or Jane Provan

The funds will be used to send local refugee youth to social justice and leadership development trainings and college readiness workshops, equipping them to become bilingual advocates for their communities. The Sanctuary and Immigrant Support Ministry is so very grateful for your generous support of RCP. Thank you!
SHARE THE PLATE THANKS The Community Service Ministry thanks the congregation for the generous donation of $1,982 to the Inter-Faith Council. These funds will be used to fund the many programs of the IFC including the food pantry and the community kitchen.

COMMUNITY CLICKERS
Come join the Community Clickers as we use needles and yarn to create comfort and warmth for our community. Our projects are made with 7" x 9" knitted and crocheted blocks of washable acrylic, #4 worsted weight yarn. Our ongoing projects include making 18-block shawls for UNC Hospice (eight were delivered in April, bringing our 2019 total to 17), baby hats for the American Heart Association, and individual projects for our first ever C3HUU Holiday Bazaar table! Join us on May 1st from 2-4 pm in the Commons Area, at our table after services on May 19th, and on Monday May 20th from 7-9 pm in the Straley Room. We generally spend some time working on a group project and then click and chat. Can't knit or crochet? Come learn! Donate finished blocks, yarn, hooks, and needles in our box in the Commons.                          Contact us for more information.
SANCTUARY FOR DIALOGUE
MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN WIDER COMMUNITY Better Angels depolarization workshops and presentations led by our church's Sanctuary for Dialogue members are being well received in the Triangle and beyond. Since November 2018 our members have been invited to teach six workshops and make seven presentations, to churches, retirement communities, college campuses, high school classes and other groups of citizens. We have five more scheduled in May and June. Participants in the workshops find that they share more values with people on the other side of the political divide than they realized. It is exciting that our values of openness, respect, curiosity and honesty are making a difference. We plan to offer a newly released workshop designed for politically liberal and progressive Community Church members in the near future. You're invited to attend our meetings (12:30 on second Sundays in the Straley) or visit our website and learn more about what we do.

WOMENCIRCLE

WomenCircle invites you to come to the Jones Building in the Community Church for our musical get-together called Making a Joyful Noise. Voices and instruments are welcome. We will gather on Friday, May 17 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please bring a favorite song that can be shared by all. Coordinators: Val Vickers, Shannon Richards, Linda Thompson

NONFICTION READERS

NONFICTION BOOK DISCUSSION FOR MAY  On Saturday, May 18, at 10:30 in the Kirby Room, the Nonfiction Readers will discuss Tailspin: The People and Forces Behind America's Fifty-Year Fall--and Those Fighting to Reverse It, by lawyer and journalist Steven Brill. The author examines how and why major American institutions no longer serve us as they should, causing a deep rift between the vulnerable majority and the protected few; and how some individuals and organizations are laying the foundation for real, lasting change. Ed Steffes will be leading our discussion. The Readers meet on the third Saturday of each month. New members and drop-ins are welcome. Click here to contact the group.
2019 FALL AUCTION
