By now, most of you have heard that Frederick L. Hemke passed away last week. His legacy includes a monumental tradition of musicianship and an ambitious career of notable creative activity — which included being the Founding Coordinator of the North American Saxophone Alliance in 1976. The warmth that characterized him as a mentor and colleague has been exemplary for generations of musicians.

With great sorrow we announce the passing of Frederick L. Hemke on Wednesday, April 17, 2019. Fred, 83, is survived by his wife Junita Borg Hemke, daughter Elizabeth Hemke Shapiro (Nicholas), son Frederic J. B. Hemke (Rachel), and grandchildren Daniel, Martin, Charlotte, and Peter. A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, June 2, 2019 from 1:30-2:30 pm at Alice Millar Chapel, Northwestern University, 1870 Sheridan Rd., Evanston, IL 60208. In lieu of flowers, we invite you to make donations in Fred’s memory to Lutheran World Relief or at 700 Light St., Baltimore, MD 21230.
