Gov. Deal signs bills focusing on
needs of rural Georgia

Gov. Nathan Deal has signed two bills that arose from the work of a committee of lawmakers that held hearings across Georgia last year looking for ways to improve the state's rural economy. Determining that access to quality health care is critical to attracting jobs, the Georgia House of Representatives' Rural Development Council made a series of recommendations that found their way into comprehensive legislation aimed at improving health care on a variety of fronts.

Gov. Nathan Deal vetoed legislation Tuesday that would have created a state health policy director and a council to develop a “strategic vision’’ for Georgia health care.

In his veto message, Deal said Senate Bill 357, “while well-intentioned, creates several unnecessary additional levels of government.’’

The legislation was backed by key Republican senators on health care issues, Dean Burke of Bainbridge and Renee Unterman of Buford, as well as by Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle.
In a February press release, Cagle said the legislation would help the state become a national leader in patient-centered health reform.

The bill drew support from many health care industry groups.

CMS Launches Rural Health Strategy for
Patient Access to Care

CMS has announced a first-of-its-kind new strategy to support patient access to care in rural regions. Currently, one in five patients live in a rural area, which are typically characterized by limited access to quality healthcare. Because of the low population density, clinician shortages, and geographic barriers, patients often struggle to visit the right doctor for the health conditions that are currently ailing them. This newest initiative from CMS aims to alleviate those issues by creating better and timelier patient access to healthcare treatment, said the agency's administrator Seema Verma.
