~ Building Community One Positive Story at a Time
|
|
My name is Anna and i’m from Halifax!!
I am currently traveling with a program called Up With People. It’s a performance and community action-based, cultural exchange program. Our program is composed of 100+ people from 14 different countries and our mission is to empower youth through music and action, to be positive agents of change for a more hopeful, peaceful & trusting world. We stay in a new city every week, living with host families who choose to open their homes to us. I have been on the road traveling since January, and will be gone until June.
Our tour started in the US, and we are currently in Mexico. After another two weeks here, we’re on to Europe.
I decided to do Up With People because my thought process was somewhere along the lines of, “if not now, when?”
I am sitting in Metepec, a small city in Mexico, as I’m emailing you right now. Sometimes I have to stop and take moments to recognize just how lucky I am to be here:)
Four to five days a week we’re doing community service, whether that be working in schools, volunteering to serve food at homeless shelters, painting murals at Boys & Girls clubs, etc. We have a team that goes ahead of us to each city, that sets up our facilities, finds host families, and basically asks - what do you need?? We have 100+ young people ready to help, what can we do? Throughout the semester, as a group we complete over 200 hours of community service work.
It’s an experience I am so so grateful for, and I know I’m lucky every single day to be doing what I’m doing.
|
|
My plan was one semester. I worked all fall to travel January to June and was planning on college in September. However, this organization has changed me in so many ways, and has opened my mind to new ideas, plans and pathways.
I’ve decided on doing another semester, which means I’ll be traveling again from July to December.
If any Buzz Around readers are willing to help sponsor my community service work with a donation, it would be much appreciated. Please mail your contribution to: Anna Lofstrom 85 Summit Street Halifax MA 02338 or my venmo is annalofstrom. Thank you for your consideration.
I love Buzz Around. You have such an awesome platform and I think it’s really cool what you’re doing with it locally.

Historical Tidbit:
Halifax Congregational Church History The Beginning Years
|
In 1757, the church was not large enough to accommodate the congregation, so it was sawed in two and a 16-foot addition set in. It was then plastered with lime made from oyster shells brought from Wareham and burned on the common opposite the church. The building had been in use in an unfinished condition all these years. Fourteen steps led up to the pulpit with gunpowder and balls stored underneath for public safety. In the gallery there were two pews reserved for Indians and Negroes. In 1821, the church was repaired again and a bell tower added on the east end. The pews were sold at auction and brought enough to pay all bills, buy a bell and still have some left over.
|
The present church was built in 1852, a little
to the west of where the first building stood, and the old building was moved back to site of the present town hall.
Respectfully submitted, Sue Basile

In honor of Earth Day
I'd like to celebrate Massachusetts moving toward healthier electricity sources.
In the 1990's while working for medical respiratory supply company, I personally spoke to respiratory therapists daily in West Virginia. They shared with me stories of the huge numbers of patients suffering COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) because of the coal mines. Coal mining is harming the environment and sickening the people of West Virginia. And then I learned, at that time, that 50% of our electricity in Massachusetts came from coal burning plants, polluting our air after doing it's damage to West Virginia.
Flash forward to today: Massachusetts closed our last coal fired plant last year and is leading the country in energy innovation. While there is much debate on which technologies to invest in... at least we ARE investing.
In honor of Earth Day, that's something to celebrate. Because making these changes as a society is hard, but they do happen, we can move forward.

We have the most power to create change right here at home. It's exciting to see. There's hope for the future. Here are some resources our Commonwealth Provides:
