Message from the Rector
May 21, 2018

"Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-in our own languages we hear them speaking about God's deeds of power."
Acts 2:7b-11

On the day of Pentecost, Jerusalem was bursting with holy energy! You see, fifty days after Passover came the Jewish festival of Shavu'ot. According to the Book of Leviticus, there was to be a festival of the first fruits the day after seven Sabbaths had passed. 7 weeks = 49 days + 1 day = 50 days. That is the day of Shavu'ot, or the Festival of Weeks. People had come to Jerusalem from all over the known world to celebrate the Festival of Weeks. In Koine Greek, which was spoken during the time of Jesus and the first apostles, Shavu'ot was called 'pentecost ē ' , which means fifty. Our celebration Pentecost has its origins in that festival. And from among that gathering of devout Jews, the Holy Spirit descended upon them; they heard a message from God each in their own language.

The Day of Pentecost represents the final manifestation of the fullness of God in God's three natures. Christ's presence on earth gave to humanity a renewed understanding of what our relationship is between us and God the Creator, and how that translates into our relationships with each other. God's manifestation in Christ is about relationship, but God's manifestation by the Holy Spirit at Pentecost is about experience. It is through our experience of God that God is made real to us.

Pentecost may mark the end of the Great Fifty Days of Easter, of Eastertide. We may put away the Paschal Candle, change the liturgical colors, and stop saying Alleluia as much, but Pentecost isn't the end of the story. It is, in fact, the beginning. It is the beginning of the Christian story that we have been commanded by Jesus Christ himself to tell and share the experience of the transcendent God among us and to share the message of love, respect, and renewal that he brought to us. Life is so full of uncertainty, change, and chaos. Sometimes we may think we have it all in control, but we really don't. Sometimes we may think that others are in control, and they may be for a time, but in the end, they aren't. Ultimately, God is in control and he wants his creation to live in the beauty of his kingdom and to trust him in his faithfulness and love. Pentecost is about an experience--how we experience God in our lives, how he moves us and transforms us. Paul said in his First Letter to the Corinthians that there are varieties of gifts given to us by the Spirit. We all have gifts that we are supposed to use to share our experience of God. Pentecost is about how we can use our gifts, share our experience, go out, and transform the world.

On Whitsuntide
by Lance Davis

Whitsuntide is one of the great octaves of the Church, running from Whitsunday  through Trinity Sunday. Its origins date to the early 1st millennium.

The giving of the Law by Moses prepared the way for the outpouring of  the Holy Ghost. The hearts of all Catholics, beloved, realize that today's  solemnity is to be honoured as one of the chief feasts, nor is there any  doubt that great respect is due to this day, which the Holy Spirit has hal lowed by the miracle of His most excellent gift. For from the day on  which the Lord ascended up above all heavenly heights to sit down at  God the Father's right hand, this is the tenth which has shone, and the  fiftieth from His Resurrection, being the very day on which it began, and  containing in itself great revelations of mysteries both new and old, by  which it is most manifestly revealed that Grace was fore-announced  through the Law and the Law fulfilled through Grace. For as of old,  when the Hebrew nation were released from the Egyptians, on the fiftieth  day after the sacrificing of the lamb the Law was given on Mount Sinai,  so after the suffering of Christ, wherein the true Lamb of God was slain  on the fiftieth day from His Resurrection, the Holy Ghost came down  upon the Apostles and the multitude of believers, so that the earnest  Christian may easily perceive that the beginnings of the Old Testament  were preparatory to the beginnings of the Gospel, and that the second  covenant was rounded by the same Spirit that had instituted the first.

The Spirit's work is still continued in the Church. By these and other  numberless proofs, dearly-beloved, with which the authority of the Di vine utterances is ablaze, let us with one mind be incited to pay reverence  to Whitsuntide, exulting in honour of the Holy Ghost, through Whom  the whole catholic Church is sanctified, and every rational soul quick ened; Who is the Inspirer of the Faith, the Teacher of Knowledge, the  Fount of Love, the Seal of Chastity, and the Cause of all Power. Let the  minds of the faithful rejoice, that throughout the world One God, Fa ther, Son, and Holy Ghost, is praised by the confession of all tongues,  and that that sign of His Presence, which appeared in the likeness of fire,  is still perpetuated in His work and gift. For the Spirit of Truth Himself  makes the house of His glory shine with the brightness of His light, and  will have nothing dark nor lukewarm in His temple.
Pope St. Leo the Great, AD 395 - 461
