Acalanes hosts the Special Olympics |
Hello Dons!
Here we are, at the end of April, hard to believe how fast this year is going for us all. Time flies when you are having fun!
This last month has been very busy with amazing events such Courageous Conversations about Race with Dr. Lori Watson, sponsored by our Acalanes Parents Club and the Moraga iKind Project. This was a well attended event by members of our community, staff throughout our own and partner districts. It was an opportunity to engage in ways to start conversations surrounding race and methods to use to begin dialogue with our families, peers, and colleagues. We look forward to future events throughout our district and community. On Tuesday of this week, Acalanes hosted their annual Northern California Special Olympics with over 54 schools represented. We were so proud to see our students organizing, setting up, and cheering on the athletes.
As we approach the end of the year,
our attendance office is bustling. For students with all-day absences, late arrivals, and early departures, please remember to call our 24-hour attendance recorder at 280-3973. If you know your student will be leaving during the day, please call the attendance recorder the day/night beforehand. The office listens to the messages once per hour, and we kindly request at least 1-2 hours notice for same-day dismissals to generate a pass. We appreciate your continued support!
With June and Graduation drawing even closer, please make sure that you are taking a few minutes to check our website and updating your calendars. We have so many events the last few weeks of school from AP testing, Prom, concerts, spring sporting events, rehearsals, recognition and award ceremonies and more. You want to be sure you don't miss any of it.
Looking forward to the next six weeks of school! GO DONS!
Your Associate Principals,
Andrea Powers and Mike Plant

Prom Wise Week
We need your help! Acalanes Leadership is hosting a week dedicated to educating students about staying safe during and after Prom. One of the activities is that students receive letters from a parent that urges them to make smart choices at Prom. We encourage you to write letters to Acalanes students that we will deliver to them. The letter should be addressed to "An Acalanes Don" and be 3-4 sentences. Things that parents have written in the past: they are an important part of our community, we want them to have a great time and also make smart choices, etc.
Leadership hopes that these meaningful letters from parents help students be more conscientious of their decisions during and after Prom.
Please drop off your letters in Ms. Walton's box in the main office by this Tuesday,
April 30.
SAGE Benefit Concert
Attend the SAGE Benefit Concert on
May 3
at 7pm in the PAC! Watch student talent and contribute to Trust In Education. Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for adults. See you there!

From the Acalanes Wellness Center

|
One of our community partners, ADAPT (the Alcohol & Drug Abuse Prevention Team), is presenting a Parent Ed event, We're All in This Together, on May 7. Law enforcement will partner with them on how we can all work together to reduce underage substance use and keep kids safe. This panel consisting of members from Lamorinda Police and Acalanes High School District Office will answer questions and share their expertise including how to spot illegal substances that could be "hidden in plain sight." This important community conversation will take place from 7:00-8:30pm at the Lafayette Library and Learning Center.

Advocacy Day 2019 was well-attended and, as always, informative. This year's topic,
School Climate, Student Well-Being, and the Role of Parents
, provided a welcome opportunity for parents, teachers, administrators and government officials to come together for a robust discussion of how best to support our children and improve our schools with respect to these issues. The Superintendents' panel included our Superintendent John Nickerson and the superintendents from Moraga, San Ramon Valley Unified, Pleasanton Unified, and Lafayette School District, as well as Lynn Mackey, the Superintendent of Schools for Contra Costa County.
Discussions over the course of the day ranged from the use of wellness centers and therapy dogs (or llamas!) to the role of arts education in reducing stress, and from students managing their parents' anxiety (as well as their own) to school districts offering flexible start times and class loads. Speakers' handouts and other resources (such as a summary of current bills affecting education and information about an app to contact legislators easily) are provided in this folder for your easy access.
