April 2018
Today

If ever there were a spring day so perfect,
so uplifted by a warm intermittent breeze

that it made you want to throw
open all the windows in the house

and unlatch the door to the canary's cage,
indeed, rip the little door from its jamb,

a day when the cool brick paths
and the garden bursting with peonies

seemed so etched in sunlight
that you felt like taking

a hammer to the glass paperweight
on the living room end table,

releasing the inhabitants
from their snow-covered cottage

so they could walk out,
holding hands and squinting

into this larger dome of blue and white,
well, today is just that kind of day.
Annual Jewelry and Accessories Sale
jewelry
Our annual Jewelry and Accessories Sale is one of our most popular events of the year! This year the sale will be held from April 2nd through the 14th, 2018 during regular library hours. Come and shop for a wide variety of wonderful jewelry, accessories, and other items, all priced to sell.

We are still accepting new and gently used fine, handcrafted, or costume jewelry of all kinds -- earrings, necklaces, bracelets, tie tacks, cuff links, and brooches/pins. We also accept broken or orphan pieces of gold and silver. But that's not all! We take scarves, gloves, purses, belts, neckties, hats, jewelry boxes, sunglasses, and more! Don't forget to ask for a donation card for tax purposes.

If you have questions about the sale, please contact Lucy Loomis, Director, at 508-362-6636 or [email protected]. And thanks!
Sturgis Library Wish List
Have you seen our Wish List board in the foyer of the Library? On it are dozens of items that library patrons, donors, and community members can sponsor, including books, movies, audiobooks, ebooks, children's items, supplies, equipment, and more! Wish list items range in price from $25 and up -- there's something available for every budget.

Nearly half of the items on our 2018 Wish List have been funded already, thanks to very generous donors.

If you are interested in funding something on the wish list, stop by the library and check out the board! If you can't make it to the library we will be happy to let you know which items are still available for funding. You can call us at 508-362-6636 or email Lucy at [email protected].

And thanks!

Donor and sponsor recognition
You may have noticed our newly repainted foyer -- now a deep, maritime blue. In the coming weeks, the foyer will be transformed into a gallery showcasing and thanking our corporate donors, our annual supporters, and the founding donors to our newly established Preservation Fund. You will be able to get copies of our annual report, which lists all donors to the library in FY2017, and you will see the individuals, organizations, and businesses that generously support Sturgis Library each year.

As many of you already know, Sturgis Library is not Town department but rather we are an independent nonprofit organization. We receive only 40% of our funds from the Town of Barnstable, and must raise 60% through donations, grants, events income, bookshop sales, car donations, and other non-municipal sources.

Since the people and businesses that support the Library are so vital to our success in serving you, we want to make sure they get the recognition they deserve by putting them front and center.

So far this year the following businesses have pledged to support Sturgis Library for three years with cash donations or gifts in kind. More businesses are in the process of pledging.

We thank all of them -- and you -- for the support. If you or your business is interested in donating to Sturgis Library, please contact Library Director Lucy Loomis at 508-362-6636 or [email protected].
FY2017 Annual Report
The Sturgis Library FY2017 Annual Report is now up on our website . It lists activities that took place between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017, and highlights the hundreds of donors to our annual appeal, special appeals, events, and more. To read the annual report, click the image at left. Print editions of the annual report are available at the Library.

We are so grateful to all of our donors and supporters -- past, present, and future. Thank you!

Decades Before Borden: The Fall River Scandal
of the "Bad" Mill Girl and the Minister
A Greg Williams True Crime Presentation
Tuesday May 8th @6:30 PM

Decades before the Borden case, Fall River millworker Sarah Cornell was found dead. Suicide? Or murder? Her death obsessed the town, and pit its mill owners against the Methodist hierarchy, which backed the suspect: its minister. Public outrage, victim blaming, and even forensic knot-tying. Did the Reverend get away with murder?

Greg Williams will give an interactive presentation dealing with the history, myths, and stories surrounding the first major murder case in Fall River.

Registration is appreciated. To register, call the Library at 508-362-6636, send an email to [email protected], or sign up online at:

New Adult Graphic Novel Section
We're excited to announce that we now have a new adult Graphic Novel section in the Simpkins Room. What is a graphic novel? Simply defined, graphic novels are book-length comics. Sometimes they tell a single, continuous narrative from first page to last; sometimes they are collections of shorter stories or individual comic strips. Graphic novel artwork runs the gamut from traditional comic-style art to atmospheric fine art.

Our adult graphic fiction collection is small at the moment, but will continue to grow over the coming months. It is located in the Large Print aisle. If you are interested, also make sure to check out our Young Adult graphic novel & nonfiction section along with our adult graphic
nonfiction located throughout our Lowell Room and second story shelves! We also have graphic novels for kids! If you have any suggestions/recommendations, make sure to talk to Corey, our Adult Services/Reference Librarian, about them.

To get you started, click here for a list of NPR's top 100 graphic novels.

April Exhibits and Displays
Gregg Roberts will be displaying and selling his hand-crafted sailor's valentines in preparation for his program on April 17th at 6PM.

Do you have artwork, photography, sculpture, crafts, a collection, or other interesting items to exhibit? Contact Corey Farrenkopf at 508-362-6636 or drop him an email at [email protected].
