Update from the Executive Director

The role of caregiver is one many will assume at some point in their life. Whether it's as parent, spouse, family member or friend, it holds both rewards and challenges.

The Care Advocacy and Resource Education Program (CARE) sponsored by the MN Stroke Association offers free monthly education sessions for caregivers. The program is featured in today's News from Members below.

The first session, Introduction to Caregiving, will meet tomorrow, March 28, 5:30 pm in Roseville: Minnesota Brain Injury Alliance/Minnesota Stroke Association, 2277 Hwy 36 W, #200, Roseville, MN  55113. Sessions are free, but space is limited and registration is required. Please call (612) 378-2742. Information about future monthly sessions can be accessed  here.

MCC members who attended the free cycle session at CycleBar in Uptown, yesterday, shared rave reviews about the experience! As a result, another free session has been added to the April calendar. A full description of the session, along with detailed information regarding special offers for MCC members, can be found below in the detailed program calendar of events.  MCC members register here.

MCC women, you're invited to attend Our Turn: A Conversation for Women.  This week, Our Turn will focus on books, with Corin Kagan leading the discussion. She invites you to think about the following: What is the best (worst) book you ever read? Why are you recommending it? Not recommending it? What books are currently on your nightstand or on your floor waiting their turn to be read? Who are your favorite (least favorite) authors? Why? What is your favorite genre? Are there books you avoid? How do you select your books? Do you prefer hard cover, soft cover, e-books? Do you preread a book before you buy it?

Although this is not a formal book exchange, please feel free to bring a book to share - either to give or to loan.

Our Turn meets every other Thursday, alternating between morning and afternoon times. Hosts and topics change each time.

Indoor Cycling Fun with MCC
Monday, April 2, 9:30 - 10:15 am
CycleBar, 2927 Girard Ave S
Cyclebar is offering another free trial of a tailor-made fitness and fun program for Mill City Commons members and friends! The 45-minute indoor cycling session is designed specifically for our age group--our music (Motown, Broadway show tunes, classic rock, Frank Sinatra, etc.), with an instructor/leader who listens to just what we want. If there's enough interest following this trial class, CycleBar will offer MCC members a series of cycle classes (a package of five, 45-minute classes for $69) at this same time slot. Parking is available in the same building as Cyclebar (which is right across the street from the Lagoon movie theater in Uptown) or at meters on the street.

Note from Karla Ekdahl, Peter Hutchinson and Patty Connelly: A group of MCC members had a ball at CycleBar on Monday, March 26 (see some of our happy faces above). We invite you to join us on Monday, April 2, at 9:30 am for the fun. Zach Pettus, son of MCC members Cecily Hines and Tom Pettus, owns this upscale spin facility right in the heart of Uptown. Zach is giving us a free 45-minute trial class that is entertaining, fun AND a great workout. Don't be intimidated, you can go at your own pace. Zach is also offering $10 off a membership for MCC members.  We want to get 20 folks to this next ride. Please sign up soon on the MCC website and follow the instructions to register with Cyclebar.

Rendezvous Readers' Book Chat
Wednesday, April 4, 9:30 - 10:30 am
Abiitan's Porter Cafe, 428 2nd St S
Join us to discuss  Hero of the Empire by Candice Millard. At the age of 24, Winston Churchill was utterly convinced it was his destiny to become prime minister of England. He arrived in South Africa in 1899, valet and crates of vintage wine in tow, to cover the brutal colonial war the British were fighting with Boer rebels and jumpstart his political career. But just two weeks later, Churchill was taken prisoner. Remarkably, he pulled off a daring escape--traversing hundreds of miles of enemy territory, alone, with nothing but a crumpled wad of cash, four slabs of chocolate, and his wits to guide him. Millard spins an epic story of bravery, savagery and chance encounters with a cast of historical characters--including Rudyard Kipling, Lord Kitchener and Mohandas Gandhi--with whom Churchill would later share the world stage. The lessons Churchill took from the Boer War would profoundly affect 20th century history.

If you'd like to read ahead, May's book is  Ragtime by E.L. Doctorow. Have a book suggestion for the Book Chat? Email  [email protected].

A year after the 1965 passage of Medicare and Medicaid, David Durenberger began a 50-plus-year journey through state and national health financing policy and health system reform, including 12 years as a U.S. Senator from Minnesota. After retiring from the Senate, he spent 20 years teaching health policy and chairing the National Institute of Health Policy at the Opus College of Business at the University of St. Thomas. Because of his journey, he's very familiar with the history of health care in America and its current issues, as well as the players involved, and he has some thoughts on a positive way forward.

It was all cleared away in a massive urban renewal project in the Gateway District that started in 1959 and ended in 1963. Shiffer has been a professional journalist for 25 years and is currently a columnist and editor at the Star Tribune. His book, The King of Skid Row, was published by the University of Minnesota Press in 2016.
