Update from our Chief Executive Officer

Dear Friends;

March is National Social Worker's Month. For me, it's meaningful because it feels like whoever is aware of this is, somehow, recognizing and celebrating our work... social work... the discipline we practice at JFCS throughout the year. As a Human Services agency, we provide several functions: Mental Health Services, Case Management for seniors, individuals and families, and Financial Aid and Advocacy. Each one of these functions is fulfilled by social workers.

Every day the nation's 650,000 social workers act as advocates, champions and leaders who make our society a better place to live. Social workers are trained to look at situations in a holistic way, bringing people together with others and their communities to find strategies to address pressing individual, group and societal problems such as hunger, affordable housing, equal rights and, of course, advocacy to make organizations and government accountable. Social workers are bound by the NASW Code of Ethics, which calls on members of the profession to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty.

I am grateful all year long to all of my amazing staff, from the interns to my executive team and everyone in between. But today, I am recognizing and thanking the social workers at Jewish Family & Children's Services, who are on our front lines with our clients every day. Their dedication to their work is undeniable, each individually and as a highly impactful group, and I feel blessed to be able to celebrate them.

Just one other thing... we are so excited that JFCS has been chosen to participate in PRESIDE - a national program on leadership and governance through a Jewish lens, funded by Legacy Heritage. This elite group of Jewish organizations met this month to begin this 18-month program for CEOs and board chairs on leading through a Jewish lens, building a sustainable culture of intentional leadership and effective governance. We are grateful for the opportunity to participate, and look forward to significant and tangible benefits to JFCS, the community and all whom we serve.

Federation Apartments in Paterson

Jewish Family & Children's Services is proud to have reignited a long-dormant relationship with the Federation Apartments in Paterson, NJ, a low-income senior apartment complex owned by Jewish Federation of Northern NJ. Founded in 1971 by the Jewish community, most of the current residents are Russian Jews, 80% of them women.

Our Community Outreach Social Workers have started an "Art of Aging" support group for residents, to help them live their senior years with joy and resilience. They also hosted a Tu B'Shevat Seder earlier this year, attended by a sizable group. Through the generosity of a private donor, JFCS was able to deliver a communal Shabbat meal for ten observant seniors. And with the opening of the Fair Lawn food pantry, the residents of the Federation Apartments will have access to food pantry services almost within walking distance.

Our rich history of involvement with this community is important to JFCS, and we are proud to be able to continue providing care and assistance to these individuals.

Depression in Children

If you are paying attention to the news these days, you are aware of the tremendous amount of anxiety and depression among children and adolescents. None of our children are immune to academic pressure, social pressure and the bombardment of media messages targeting them daily.

With this in mind, the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended that all children ages 11-18 be screened annually for depression. Jewish Family & Children's Services has reached out to pediatric practices in our area to share information about the resources available through our agency. With over 800 clients currently in our clinical practice, 49% are children under the age of 18. Our talented staff includes LCSWs with specialized training in children and adolescents. Our offices are well equipped and include play therapy rooms for our youngest clients. With office hours available six days a week and evening appointments available until 9pm, we are an easily accessible resource for the mental health needs of families.

Please ask your own family pediatrician if he or she would like information about JFCS. We would be happy to be in touch.
