Here's what's new on the Jackson County 4-H website this month!
Afterschool Adventures

Our April Afterschool Adventures will focus on celebrating Earth Day by learning about reusing or recycling what we can't use. Riverside will meet on April 3rd (RSVP by March 30th), Pleasantview will meet on April 10th (RSVP by April 6th), and HL-O will meet on April 17th (RSVP by April 13th). Ear Tags/Animal ID Deadline

All sizes of ear tags are available at the Extension Office for $1.25 each. Remember, Animal ID Deadline is May 15th!


LQA&E Update

LQA&E letters have gone out to all youth who need to be trained this year.
New in 2018 - 4-H members who need to take Livestock Quality Assurance and Ethics (LQA&E) training (all youth participating as state fair 4-H livestock exhibitors in beef, dairy, sheep, swine, poultry, rabbit, meat goat, dairy goat and lama AND youth showing swine in grades 3-5) will have two different options to become certified:


Congratulations Dog Project Bowl Team!

The Jackson County 4-H Senior Dog Project Bowl team went undefeated taking first place at the March 17th Regional 4-H Dog Project Bowl competition in Redwood Falls, MN.


It's Time to Register for SW 4-H Summer Camp!

4-H Residential Camp is for youth who have just completed grades 3-6 and is held at Shetek Lutheran Ministries Camp on Lake Shetek.  This full service facility offers cabins, a full menu of great food, and a wide variety of recreational activities including swimming, canoeing and campfires!
There will be five fun tracks offered during camp.  Campers will participate in two tracks of their choice.  Each track offers different topics and varied program lessons.  


AK-SAR-BEN

DNA envelopes for AK-SAR-BEN are now in the office! They cost $5 each. As a reminder, all MARKET BEEF needs to turn in a sample to the Extension Office by April 10th! All other livestock DNA envelopes are due June 8th

We are setting this committee up as a result of our GOT: VIVA plan, and we are hoping to have at least one youth (grades 6+) or adult representative from each club. Please contact us if you have any questions!

2018 Jackson County Fair

The 150th Jackson County Fair planning committee has chosen "Come Together" as a theme and we are now looking for old fair memorabilia, pictures, news articles, etc. to display next July. In addition, we are also open to your suggestions for events, displays, etc.

LQA&E - April 7th
A Face to Face Training is set for Saturday, April 7th, 2018 from 9 AM-12 PM at the Worthington Regional Office.  Please RSVP to the office if you plan on attending.  This training is free of cost, and certification is good for 3 years 
 
Project Day Spotlight - April 21
Here's an exciting opportunity for youth to make some fair projects! Project Day Spotlight will be held on Saturday, April 21 from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. at the Windom High School (enter through the east doors). Registration will be 15 minutes prior to the first session you're attending. There are eight sessions offered and youth can select three project sessions they would like to participate in. The sessions are FREE thanks to funding from the United Drive

4-H youth in grades eight and up are invited to attend the third annual Explore Careers in Ag Day at Riverview LLP in Murdock. It's time to discover the opportunities awaiting you in the world of agriculture!

Come learn more about the Beef Project Area by attending this Two-Day Grad Program hosted by Stock Show University Professors, taking place in Nobles County! This program is made possibly by Sullivan Supply, to find out more of what may be happening, please click article title!

Join us for the Southwest Minnesota 4-H Rabbit Fun Show on Sunday, May 6, 2018, in Olsen Arena on the Murray County Fairgrounds.  Registration for the show will be from 10:30 - 11:45 a.m., with the rabbit show starting at noon.  All breeds are welcome! 
The cost to register is $2/rabbit for judging, and $1/rabbit for the Costume Class.  There will be someone available to tattoo your rabbits from 10:30 a.m. - noon, at a cost of $1/rabbit.

Western, English, showmanship, trail, fun games, as well as other topics will be covered at the Lita Hottel Equestrian Clinic, June 27-29 at the Murray County fairgrounds horse arena.  Cost for this clinic is $230, if registered prior to June 1.  Registration is limited to 15 riders.

Meet Evan, a 4-H'er who's using his voice to impact youth across Minnesota. Associate dean and state 4-H director Dorothy Freeman reflects on the importance of youth getting to lead alongside caring adults.

The 2018 4-H Engineering Design Challenge is here! Youth across the state in grades three and up can participate in this fun, team focused STEM based challenge. Join one of three webinars being planned over the next few months to update volunteer coaches and teams about this year's challenge!

Registration opens on May 19 for Youth Exploring Leadership and Learning Outloud! (YELLO!) The event is open to students who have completed grade 6 - one year past high school and will take place June 12-15 in the 4-H building at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds! Registration closes May 7.

The 2018 - 2019 Minnesota 4-H State Ambassador team application process will open in mid-April. This is a fantastic leadership opportunity for youth currently in grades 10-12. Apply by May 20!

Help us grow the next generation of true leaders-vote for Minnesota! The Raise Your Hand campaign is a nationwide call to action for alumni and friends to "Raise Your Hand" and empower our youth with the skills to lead for a lifetime. The campaign runs April 1 - May 15. Each hand raised is a vote towards a $20,000, $10,000 or $5,000 award for the three states with the most hands raised.

The First Generation Initiative team is excited to announce a video contest to highlight the great work being done by 4-H'ers to recruit and orient folks new to 4-H! Submit your video by July 1 for a chance to win a $50 Visa gift card and have your video showcased at the state fair!

4-H clubs, Ambassador programs and other 4-H groups are encouraged to plan service projects in April for True Leaders in Service month!

Join us April 15-21 for National Volunteer Week as we celebrate the thousands of volunteers who support youth in developing their passion and important life skills. Thank you to all Minnesota 4-H volunteers!

Tractor Supply's spring Paper Clover Campaign will run from April 11-22. Make donations online or in stores to help raise money for 4-H programs.

This year's workshop will take place June 15-17 and is open to youth in third grade and up, families, trainers, potential trainers, and youth and adult leaders. Registration information will be online soon.

Workshops will take place April 28-29 in Redwood Falls and May 5-6 in Wadena. This training is open to 4-H Dog Project trainers, potential trainers, high school age youth leaders and adult leaders who train in county programs. Register by April 20.

2018 Gopher Dairy Camp will be held June 10-12 at the University of Minnesota St. Paul campus. This camp is open to youth who have completed grades 6-9, but have not yet started 10th grade. Prior experience with dairy cattle is required. Register by May 25.

Livestock judging enthusiasts in grades 6-12 are invited to attend livestock judging camp June 18-20 at the University of Minnesota St. Paul campus.

The swine judges training clinic is designed for those already judging county fair 4-H swine shows as well as those who would like to get started. The clinic will be held at the animal arena on the University of Minnesota St. Paul Campus on April 14. Register by April 6 to ensure your spot!

Several scholarships are being offered for Minnesota 4-H youth pursuing post-secondary studies at accredited colleges and universities. Over $20,000 is awarded annually through a competitive application process. Visit the 4-H scholarship website to learn more and apply.

A 4-H dairy goat judges training is planned for Saturday, May 19 at the Benton County Fairgrounds. Adults (past 4-H age eligibility) who are interested should mark their calendars and register now!

New in 2018 - 4-H animal science members can participate in one of two options for Livestock Quality Assurance certification training: 1) Livestock Quality Assurance and Ethics (LQA&E) training, or 2) Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) training. All youth participating as state fair 4-H livestock exhibitors must complete Livestock Quality Assurance training requirements.

Register by April 6 for the April 21-22 training to be held at the Long Lake Conservation Center in Palisades. This training is for Minnesota 4-H adults and youth (9th grade and older) that lead or would like to lead training in shooting sports or wildlife.
