Just when you think you have a tough job, you look around and see that maybe others have it even tougher. Yesterday while toiling away in the office, I tuned in to our County Board of Supervisor’s monthly meeting, which is available live online. I was aware of some critical agenda items slated for discussion and vote. I was very interested in following along the debate and vote on several things but, particularly, the motion proffered up by County Supervisor Jim Desmond regarding opening up of all businesses in San Diego County. The meeting went all day, including the discussions as well as public comments which were both read and carried live via phone. And I mean literally all day. Supervisor Desmond’s motion received no support and was DOA. But, the process was fascinating to listen too, and although held virtually sans those that were in the County Board’s Chambers, it was well run and there were no great technical glitches or hacks. Now back to my point, the Board of Supervisors have a tough job. Representing their collective districts and answering to their constituencies all the while, knowing they are one-election away from possibly being out of office, must be stressful. Add to this the bipartisan bickering plus dealing with this pandemic, and its effect on everyone well, my day job is a piece of cake. Besides, I get to meet plenty of good people like you.

This is why no matter what party or views you represent, running for and being elected to public office takes a lot, and I, for one, am thankful to those that choose this path in life. They may not be the candidate I support, but I’m grateful for those who put themselves out there and run. Without candidates, there would be no democracy.

Speaking of candidates, the Escondido Chamber/Times-Advocate Candidate Forums are firming up. This is a 4-part series we are hosting in conjunction with the talented people at the Times-Advocate, bringing forward the most relevant local candidates running to represent us. We finish the series with a roundtable discussion of the Statewide Ballot Measures. The forums are virtual and open for all to attend from the comfort of their home. See the schedule below, and in this week’s edition of the TA and on the Chamber’s website.

47 days left until election Tuesday…Please make sure you register and vote this November 3rd.

Sincerely,

James Rowten (JR)
