The U.S. Department of Education is laying the groundwork for a re-authorization of the nation's primary special education law.

The agency said it plans to conduct several surveys this fall to gain a better understanding of how the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act is being implemented across the country.

Behavioral Disorders in Kids w/Autism Linked to Reduced Brain Connectivity

More than a quarter of children with autism spectrum disorder are also diagnosed with disruptive behavior disorders. For the first time, Yale researchers have identified a possible biological cause: a key mechanism that regulates emotion functions differently in the brains of the children who exhibit disruptive behavior.

FDA Approves Marketing of First Device to Treat ADHD

(HealthDay)-Marketing has been approved for the first medical device to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Friday.

The Monarch external Trigeminal Nerve Stimulation (eTNS) System is available by prescription only for patients aged 7 to 12 years old who are not currently taking prescription medication for ADHD. The

Neighborhood Under Construction For Those With Special Needs

In what developers say is a first, an entire neighborhood of brand-new homes is set to hit the market that is specifically designed for adults with developmental disabilities.
The development called Luna Azul is located in Phoenix. A model home and the neighborhood clubhouse and pool are slated to open in May, while the remainder of the 30 houses are on track to be completed by the end of the year.

How Technology Affects the Attention Span of Children

As more and more children are exposed to increased amounts of screen time, it is important to take a close look at how technology affects the attention span of children. The latest research indicates that children spend hours per day interacting with screens. During the early years of childhood development, hours of screen time can take away time that could be devoted to free play, fine motor, gross motor and visual perceptual skill practice in the real world.

Study: Evidence That Gut May Indeed Play a Role in Autism

In one of the first published examples of how the gut may play a role in autism, scientists have found that a "fecal transplant" helped to substantially improve behavior and gastrointestinal health in children with the developmental disorder.

There has been a lot of buzz around contract staffing as the number of contract workers continues to break records.  However, the talk usually surrounds why companies are gravitating toward contracting.  The fact is of the matter is that candidates are also helping to drive this trend.

The days when contract work was taken only as a last resort when a direct hire job could not be secured are over.  Contract work is also no longer limited to "temps" in clerical and blue collar roles.  Contract staffing spans all industries in positions up to and including the C-suite.

In 1917, a small group met on March 15-18th in Clifton Springs, New York, and established The National Society for the Promotion of Occupational Therapy. In the United States, we celebrate this as the official start of our profession.

In 2017, we are now celebrating the centennial of occupational therapy. This gives us good reason to look back over the past century and celebrate some of the best moments from OT History.

1. Aren't too messy
2. Don't require too many materials

3. Your lunch bunch groups are a little more reluctant to meet with you because the weather is more appealing.
