THE HART OHANA
SHINES IN THE
"SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY"!
The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation and the
HART Ohana are proud to
have been selected as recipients of the 2018 "Spirit of Community Award" by the Aloha United Way. Executive Administrator Gemma Espresion (above) organized the fundraising campaign and accepted the award on behalf of HART at the AUW's Annual Recognition Luncheon at the Sheraton Waikiki.
The "Spirit of Community Award' recognizes organizations showing an "extraordinary level of commitment" in its fundraising efforts to benefit the AUW and the many local charities the AUW supports, positively impacting hundreds of thousands of lives. Through its charitable endeavors, the Aloha United Way works to assist families in need, reduce homelessness, provide more opportunities for our kupuna to age gracefully, and better prepare our
keiki
for life.
HART's employees, contractors, and consultants
joined forces in this year's workplace fund-raising campaign to help AUW in its mission to "create hope and change the landscape of our community for the better."

STATE OFFICIALS ISSUE
ADVISORY REGARDING
VOLCANIC HEALTH HAZARDS
As the lava flow from Kilauea volcano on Hawai'i Island continues, and southerly winds occasionally prevail, vog conditions and the presence of sulfur dioxide in the air may
increase and fluctuate in various areas of the state. While these intermittent conditions do not pose a public health threat in areas beyond the evacuation zone, they have raised concerns about respiratory health.
The Hawai'i Department of Health (DOH), as a precautionary measure, is encouraging residents and visitors to access the
Hawaii Inter-Agency Vog Information Dashboard for the most comprehensive and up-to-date online information on vog and sulfur dioxide from volcanic activity in Hawaii.
Both residents and visitors are advised to be prepared and aware of their surrounding conditions, and take the following actions should conditions warrant:
- Reduce outdoor activities that cause heavy breathing. Avoiding outdoor activity and exercise during vog conditions can reduce exposure and minimize health risks. This is especially important for sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions including asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, and chronic lung and heart disease.
- Stay indoors and close windows and doors. If an air conditioner is used, set it to recirculate.
- Always keep medications on hand and readily available. Daily prescribed medications, should be taken on schedule and may provide protection from the effects of sulfur dioxide.
- Contact a doctor as soon as possible if any health problems develop.
- Do not smoke and avoid second-hand smoke.
- Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.
- Have family emergency plans prepared and ready.
- Heed warnings by county and state emergency management officials.
