Child’s Play consists of a 15-minute storytime complete with books, rhymes, and songs followed by 30 minutes of imaginative playtime. This program is best-suited for ages 2 to 6 years old, but all ages are welcome to attend.
Reading Assistance Dogs
Thursdays, February 7 and March 7, 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Children have the opportunity to read aloud to dogs from Quad City Canines. This is great practice for kids and helps them build their vocabulary and self-confidence. No registration is required.

After School Kids Lab

This is an opportunity for school-age kids to have fun on early-out Wednesdays. The After School Kids Lab will alternate between making crafts, doing science experiments, playing games, and learning new skills. Read Local: Writers on the Avenue

Read Local is a program that hosts local authors to allow them to discuss their work and processes with the public. Join us as authors from Writers on the Avenue present. Writers on the Avenue is a non-profit organization devoted to supporting local writers and promoting the literary arts in and around Muscatine, Iowa. Presenters will read excerpts from their pieces and talk briefly about what inspired them to write and what the writing process was like. Discussion will also touch on what to expect from the editing and publishing process. Read Local is a collaboration with the Midwest Writing Center.

U.S. National Security Decisions: A Look Behind the Curtain at the NSC

Created in 1947, the National Security Council is the most important security decision-making body in the U.S., thus, the world. This presentation will look at how the NSC operates through examples of critical decisions over its history (up to today). Presenting on this subject will be Captain Alison S. McCrary, who has served on the Joint Staff as Officer in Charge of joint reserve support to the U.S. Military Delegation to NATO in Brussels, Belgium, and liaison to the Pentagon. She currently holds a position coordinating Department of Defense Support to Civil Authorities in disaster response. This program is a collaboration with the Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities.

My Experiences as a US Naval Aviator during the 1973 Arab-Israeli War

Retired Navy Captain Dale Hendricks will relate his experiences during the 1973 Arab-Israeli War and the confrontation between Greece and Turkey over Cypress. Dale Hendricks participated in two cruises to the Mediterranean from 1972-75, flying the single-seat A-7E attack jet with Air Wing 7 aboard the USS Independence, CV-62. This program is a collaboration with the Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities.
Community Connections: Alice’s Ordinary People Documentary

World Affairs Council - Fake News, A Panel Discussion

This panel discussion, led by Alan Sivell, Assistant Professor of Communication at St. Ambrose University, and Mark Ridolfi, Assistant Editor at the North Scott Press, will focus on the topic of “fake news” and the undermining of truth. Topics for discussion include its impact on democratic institutions, control of information, prevalence on social media, the role of traditional media outlets, and what citizens can do to combat it. This program is co-sponsored by the Bettendorf Public Library and the World Affairs Council.
World Affairs Council - Knowing the Cyber World: Why We Should Be Concerned Too

Dr. Sayonnha Mandal, Assistant Professor of Computer and Information Sciences at St. Ambrose University, will discuss cybersecurity and will explain how the cyber world affects us as individuals and in the community and how it affects our decisions in government policies, politics, elections and individual privacy rights. Community Connections: Prairie Creek Station

Prairie Creek Station plays music that spans American Historical musical traditions. This old-time string band’s performances are full of joy and energy. Between songs the band will discuss the history of the tunes and the instruments they play. The band is comprised of Kevin Lendt on guitar and vocals, Chuck Dodds on fiddle, Neil Zaborowski on autoharp and banjo, Jim Lyon on mandolin, and Mary McAndrew on upright bass and vocals.
