REDISCOVERING LITERATURE WEEK

This week Peninsula students celebrated the love of reading during Literature Week with activities during lunch and in their English classes. The staff shared their favorite readings during the passing periods all week, while students swapped books in classes. On Monday, students participated in origami and crafts with re-purposed book pages. Then, Tuesday, the English department celebrated our seniors' fantastic CASSPP scores with Cookies and Milk during Panther Time. Wednesday brought a scavenger hunt for student-decorated literary rocks on the campus. The week wrapped up with a fun Character Costume Dress-up activity and a Poetry Reading. Peninsula students really got into the spirit!

GOLD CROWN AWARD
Our school newspaper, The Pen, was one of fifteen newspapers awarded the Gold Crown from Columbia University's Scholastic Press Association on March 16 for their performance during the 2016-17 school year. Last year's leadership included Annie Benedict, Marine Fujisawa, and Esther Chu. Recipients of this award exemplified excellence in writing, editing, design, and production. The Pen's small and dedicated staff is celebrating this tremendous victory and continuing their combined efforts to earn the same title next year.

CHOIR CONCERT
On Friday evening our beautiful choir, under the direction of Dan Doctor, performed their Spring Concert for a very appreciative audience at the Rolling Hills United Methodist Church. They sang songs of peace, joy, faith and love originating from throughout the world. A special thanks to the choir's accompanists Izumi Erskine and Kevin Brown.

The event was organized by the PVPHS Service Learning Leadership class and their teacher Heather Myrick.

Student speakers included Allycia Fu, Maximilian Park,
Ailun Shi, Samantha Liu, and Kaylen Ng

Retired PVPHS CCC Director Terry Lewallen gave an inspiring talk

TSA TEAMS UPDATE
TSA Last Saturday, PVPHS students participated in the local TSA (Technology Student Association) TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science) competition on the Pen High campus. TSA TEAMS is an annual competition for students designed to help them discover their potential for engineering. Students apply math and science knowledge in practical, creative ways to solve real-world engineering challenges. TSA TEAMS sparks excitement by providing an integrated STEM learning experience, allowing students a unique inside look at problem solving from an engineer's viewpoint, and increasing students' self-confidence in solving complex problems while working on a team. The competition inspires students to consider engineering majors and careers. The results of Saturday's competition are expected in April.

This year the TSA TEAMS at PVPHS has been organized by student presidents Nathan Kim, Saehui Hwang, Alisa Hathaway, Rei Landsberger, and Tim Jiang. We express special thanks Principal Kuykendall who was the keynote speaker at the competition, and to faculty members Mrs. Kealey, Mr. Twiet, and Mrs. Vijaiyan for volunteering and serving as competition judges. We also express our special gratitude to Mr. Jeff Lee (PVP community engineer) and Ms. Regina Lee (last year's PVPHS TSA TEAMS president and current Caltech student) who also helped us as volunteer judges. We also appreciate all the parents and judges who helped us run the competition: Helen Kim, Sam Landsberger, Miko Landsberger, Swan Wedekind, Jerry Wedekind, Damon Lipps, Vanessa Lipps, Dan Tseng, Bobby Terada, Karyn Zafran, Eunice Bae, Madhu Jalan, Jack Wu, Jane Yen, Grace Kymn, Irina Gordion, Hannah Kang, Doris Kang, Eunsook Kim, Sharon Kim, Jung Shin, and Kyoung Ean Rim.
