TAHOMA FOOTBALL

Hello Bear Football Family

I hope this message finds all of our families safe and healthy. This week, our players will start a school year in a way we’ve never started one before. We have spent a lot of time preparing our teachers for a new style of learning. My ask of our players…show up, work hard, communicate, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. This will be different but the more we do it, the better we’ll all get at it. We hope being a part of our football program teaches effort, concentration along how to handle adversity and work with others (family). These are skills we will need to use as the school year begins.

As for football, our hope and expectation is to begin our season on Wednesday, February 17th. In the meantime, it’s important to do all we can to prepare for a successful season. In the spring, our district supported us holding outdoor conditioning workouts with the players. The players who participated in those workouts did a great job – the energy, focus, and effort, was better than we expected. I’m especially proud of the group of incoming 9th graders who participated.

Beginning August 17th our coaches were no longer allowed to meet with the players in person. Our plan is to communicate with the players like we did in the spring where we divided the team into seven squads with each led by a pair of seniors. I’m working with the seniors to determine the best way to communicate with their squads. At this point, the freshman players and some of the new players haven’t been assigned a squad. We will have a team meeting during Power Hour in the second week of school – our coaches want to give everyone a chance to get settled into their school routines in the first week. We’ll do a Zoom meeting with the senior leaders, new players, and freshmen during Power Hour in the second week of school to get everyone assigned to a squad. Remind your players to check the school announcements for information on the day of the meeting.

As I wrote in the last newsletter – these are unprecedented times. Continue to take care of yourselves, look out for each other, reach out if you’re struggling and know that we will get through this. #ONETOWNONETEAM

Email from a few weeks ago below for those that may have missed it and our new families just now getting updates.

Bear Football Families,

I hope this message finds you and you families safe and in good health.

Since Monday, 6/29 for the varsity/JV kids and July 13th for the freshmen, we’ve been able to conduct conditioning trainings. I am proud of the number of kids who’ve participated. Their effort has been outstanding and we’ve seen them grow as athletes and teammates. Unfortunately, beginning Monday, August 17th coaches will not be allowed to have contact with kids and there will be no more workouts until further notice. We need to make sure the players maintain the conditioning they’ve built and are in the process of coming up with a plan that can be done without coach supervision. We hope to resume the Zoom team meetings starting next week. I will connect with the senior leaders on the best time and best way to connect with their “squads.”

If your player is a freshman or didn’t participate in the spring Zoom calls, send me an email (tdavis@tahomasd.us) so we can get your players connected with a group.

Secondly, many of you are probably aware the WIAA has adjusted the sports calendar for 2020-21. Football is in Season 3 and is scheduled to start Wednesday, February 17th. Here’s a link to the WIAA calendars:

We’re in unprecedented times. We need to take care of ourselves, take care of each other, and reach out if you’re struggling. We’ll get through this and be stronger in the end!
