Update on the Committee for Catholic Education Leadership

Bishop George V. Murry, SJ, steps down from Chair of Committee on Catholic Education amidst treatment for Leukemia; Bishop John M. Quinn of Winona to serve as Chair of the Committee.

On the Federal Grant look out.....

  • ESSA - Title IIA Professional Development and Title IVA Student Support and Academic Achievement State Grants saw significant boosts in funding in the FY18 Budget. You should be consulting with your LEAs now about that funding. Based on previous year's schedules of formula grants, we anticipate the following timeline:
      • May Initial Allocation Estimates Announced
      • July First Round of Allocations
      • October Second Round of Allocations
  • STOP School Violence Act will be in two grants coming out of the Department of Justice supporting school safety.
    • $50m will be under the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) and
    • $25m under the COPS program.
    • We are still awaiting details on this grant process. We anticipate information will be posted here  in the coming days or weeks.
  • Disaster Relief --There are two different programs available to affected private schools by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Maria and the fires in California.
      • RESTART Program - operations assistance to school who had to close due to damage. The Department of Education just released FAQs here .
      • ANNOUCEMENT FROM ONPE:   On Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at 12:00 noon (ET), the U.S. Department of Education's Offices of Safe and Healthy Students, Non-Public Education (ONPE), and General Counsel are hosting a webinar to discuss the newly released disaster recovery assistance guidance on the Immediate Aid to Restart School Operations (Restart).  We encourage representative of eligible SEAs and private schools to participate in the webinar as the Department will discuss the provisions related to restarting school operations following the eligible 2017 disasters as found in the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018. Prior to the webinar, we encourage you to review the guidance and submit any clarifying questions you have to [email protected].  ONPE will review these questions and address them during the webinar.

    • Tuition Impact Aid for Displaced students - The U.S. Department of Education (Department) invites you to participate in a conference call to discuss the Temporary Emergency Impact Aid for Displaced Students (Emergency Impact Aid). SEA applications are due on May 25th. Please make sure to proactively reach out to your LEAs to ensure your displaced students are counted. The May 15 webinar will view equitable participation through the lens of the consultation process, focusing on the requirements of the process and how to best participate in consultation to ensure high-quality services for students, teachers, and parents.


Michelle Doyle is the CEO of Michelle Doyle Educational Consulting, LLC. Michelle has been the education lobbyist for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Director of the Office of Non-Public Education at the US Department of Education. Her expertise is in the equitable participation of private school students 
in federal education programs.
