Updates from Jefferson City Public Schools
JCPS 2019-2020 Student Calendar Approved

The 2019-2020 calendar was voted on and approved by the Board of Education at the December 2018 Board of Education meeting.

Please make special note of the later school start date - AUGUST 27th:

  • School starts later this year to allow construction/renovation crews at Jefferson City High School as much time as possible to finish work prior to students returning to the building.
  • With school starting later, there is not the opportunity for professional development days during the school year like we usually have. Therefore, more professional development days were added prior to the start of the school year (six days now, instead of three).

Start & End Times Changes

JCPS leaders have proposed changing school start and end times for the 2019-2020 school year.  You can read more information about the Proposed Start and End Time Changes here .

The community is invited to join us to learn more about these proposed changes at two upcoming community meetings:

  1. Tuesday, January 29, 2019: Lewis & Clark Middle School, 6pm
  2. Thursday, January 31, 2019: Thomas Jefferson Middle School, 5pm

These community discussions will also be live-streamed on our  JCPS YouTube channel .
JCPS Board of Education Update

The Jefferson City Board of Education held its monthly meeting on Monday, December 10, 2018.

The  agenda  included:
  • A recognition for Bob Weber, Director of Facilities, who is retiring after 25 years with the district;
  • Discussion of moving secondary schools to a traditional seven period schedule, the rationale & motivation behind consideration, and the feedback gathered thus far from staff;
  • Further discussion of changing start/end times for the 2019-2020 school year including research as to the benefit for students and a plan for collecting staff & community input;
  • Brief overview of a potential boundary line policy update which would potentially involve the board reviewing student attendance areas and enrollment on a regular basis (to be discussed at the next board policy committee meeting on 12/19);
  • Final approval of the 2019-2020 school calendar;
  • Presentation and approval of the 2017-2018 district audit;

December's JCPS Difference Makers

Join us in congratulating the  # DifferenceMakers  recognized at Monday night's Board of Education meeting!

LEARNING : Haley Fischer, the new mental health counselor at JCAC, is truly doing an amazing job. Some of our students have difficulties trusting adults, so considering she is new this year it is really incredible to see the relationships she has built in such a short time.

PARTNERSHIPS : Tarsha Harris, Raquel Galbaldon, Lauren Coons, and Crystal Meyr are difference makers because of their work for Girls on the Run. They have volunteered their time by coming to weekly practices after school.

STEWARDSHIP : Kim Drainer, Lisa Maylee, Linda Armstrong, Angie Sturm and Denise Pierce worked extremely hard to get out September payroll. It is the biggest payroll of the year that also comes with a lot of stress and pressure.

Read more about these groups - and see other members of the  #JCPSfamily  that were nominated as #DifferenceMakers here.
Girls on the Run Program

Girls on the Run is a youth empowerment program for girls in grades 3-8. Over the course of 10-weeks, girls engage in life lessons that help them build self-confidence, personal character, skills competence and personal connections with their peers. As part of the program, they also learn to set and achieve goals by training to complete a non-competitive 5k. At the end of the season, all of the girls in the program come together to celebrate their accomplishments at the end-of-season celebration 5k. Here they are recognized for the personal growth they've accomplished during the season and they get to see their goal of completing a 5k come full circle. Crossing the finish line is a tangible way for the girls to see their hard work and commitment fully accomplished. The girls who participated in Girls on the Run this fall at Thorpe Gordon celebrated their accomplishments at the 5k race held on Saturday, December 1 in Columbia.

Heart of Missouri Girls on the Run is an independent council under Girls on the Run International and oversees programming in the Jefferson City area. We are so proud of our Jefferson City girls and the coaches who lead and mentor them and are proud to know the Thorpe Gordon coaches are being recognized as "Difference Makers". This fall these women lovingly gave of their time to lead their team of girls thorough lessons that helped the girls learn how to stand up for themselves and others and how to positively manage their own emotions and actions. They are TRUE heroes and we are incredibly proud of them and grateful to them for their service!

THANK YOU to our 2018 Thorpe Gordon Coaches!!!!
