A Message from the Principal

Lovejoy HS News 01 28 19

P arents and Guardians,

This past Friday, we had the opportunity to host our WSMS 8th graders for "Bump Up Day". Those students got to tour parts of the high school and hear from LHS staff and students about courses and opportunities available at LHS.  They also encouraged our 8th graders to pursue their passions and be open to taking classes they may not have considered before. With registration for 8th graders coming in the next few weeks, "Bump Up Day" was developed to help incoming 9th graders as they make selections for their 2019-20 class schedules. We will also have our annual Showcase on Monday, February 11th at 6:00 p.m. in the LHS Commons. This event is for parents and students to get more information about course offerings in addition to the different clubs and extra-curricular opportunities available at LHS. See the details below regarding some parent registration meetings as well.

This Saturday, February 2nd is our annual Denim and Diamonds fundraising event hosted by the Foundation for Lovejoy Schools. I want to personally invite you to come out to the event and support the Foundation as they work to raise funds to enrich the school experience of our students. Click here to purchase tickets since today is the last day to do so. I hope to see you there!

Please take a few minutes to review the important information and upcoming events listed below. I hope you and your student have a great week.

Sincerely,

Chris Mayfield
Principal
Lovejoy High School

Lovejoy Offers Group Counseling
Lovejoy is offering group counseling for students for a variety of areas. The groups will meet weekly, during school hours, and will be facilitated by Lovejoy's Social Worker, Noelle Gove, LCSW. The overall goal of the counseling groups is to address student's social/emotional needs that may be impacting their experience and success at school. Groups are being offered, based on need, to every campus in the district, grades K-12.

If you are interested in your student participating in a group, please click here to complete the interest form. Noelle Gove will be in contact with parents regarding further details of the group and to obtain consent for student participation. This form is not a consent for counseling, but rather a survey of interest.

UIL CX District Results (1/23)

On Wednesday of last week, we hosted the UIL 5A District 10 Cross Examination Debate tournament here at Lovejoy High School. We are incredibly proud of the students that competed. Here are the results:

1st Place - Andrew Mao and Tajvir Singh
4th Place - Jack Czyz and Mitch Laman
5th Place - Sebi Ramirez and Jannat Verma

Andrew and Tajvir qualified for the UIL CX State Championship to be help at the University of Texas at Austin in March.

Flower Mound Swing Results (1/25-26)

Since this is a "swing" tournament there are effectively two tournaments ran in the same building at the same time. Students are allowed to enter both "sides" of the tournament to compete. The exception to this is CX, where only one side of the tournament offers it.

LD Debate: Ashley Rihani: semifinals on one side
Kaya Czyz: octofinals on one side, quarterfinals on the other

CX Debate:  Quarterfinals: Tajvir Singh and Andrew Mao
Semifinals: Jack Czyz and Mitch Laman

PF Debate: Matthew Sipes and Garrett Larson: quarterfinals on one side
Shalin Mehta and Pierce Richardson: quarterfinals on one side

Domestic Extemp: Geneva Miller: semifinals on one side

Original Oratory: Ryan Wang: semifinals on one side
Geneva Miller: semifinals on one side

Student Congress: Chase Stevens: 5th place on one side, finals on the other side

LHS Wrestling

Women's District 9-5A matches 1/23:

Our women competed at home on Tuesday and all wrestled very well.  Lilly Musselman, Elle Foster, Avery Ashley, Charis Vela, Katherine Heath, and Morgan Elvin finished a combined 7-3 on the night.

Senior Lilly Musselman turns her Melissa opponent en route to another pin.

Senior Morgan Elvin gets the fall, one of her three wins by pin on the night.

District 9-5A Dual Championship 1/25:

Our men won Lovejoy's first ever District Dual Championship this past Friday night with a dominant performance in the semifinal match over Highland Park backed up by a strong Championship match against Creekview.  It is worth noting that Highland Park and Creekview finished runner-up and 3rd place, respectively in the recent state dual tournament, making these wins much more meaningful in the state-side rankings!

In the semifinals, the Leopards were led with the opening match win by Jakob Underwood.  The sophomore pinned the Scot in the first period.  The Scots proved to be a worthy opponent, winning the next five matches in a row to lead the dual by a score of 27-5.
Senior Johnny Dorlon turned it around for the Leopards, winning the next match by fall and setting off what would be an 8-match win streak for Lovejoy to close out the match!  Notable wins in this stretch were earned by sophomores Dalton Braun and Zack Valentine, freshmen Trent Rucker, and junior Dillon Hebert.

Senior Johnny Dorlon works his signature chicken wing series to pin his HP opponent.

Sophomore Zack Valentine (above) controls his HP opponent on his way to a key win for the Leopards.  Freshman Trent Rucker (below) works to turn his HP opponent for the pin.

In the championship match, the Leopards raced out to an early 18-6 lead thanks to solid matches by senior Austen Shelley, freshmen Braydon Wright, and junior Grant Sessions.
Freshman Trent Rucker and sophomore Jakob Underwood once again had dominant wins
to help the Leopards finish off the dual!

Senior Austen Shelley (above) opens the championship dual for Lovejoy with a pin of his Creekview opponent.  Freshman Braydon Wright (below) follows up with another pin and a key win for the Leopards.

Junior Grant Sessions (above) works a solid hammer series to pin his Creekview opponent.
Sophomore Jakob Underwood (below) caps off the championship for Lovejoy with a throw and a pin!

Lovejoy Mom Selected for 2019 Boston Marathon
Lovejoy mom, Tracy Sutherlin, is asking for your help in raising money to support the Leukemia Lymphoma Society Team in Training.

"Hi Friends, this is Tracy Sutherlin. I know you've seen me running the streets of Allen, Fairview and Lucas for many years and you know that running is my passion. I'm super excited to announce that I've been selected to be the North Texas Leukemia Lymphoma Society (LLS) Team In Training Representative at the 2019 Boston Marathon. Not only do I get to fulfill a lifelong dream of running the Boston Marathon, I get to do it for a purpose!

Every 3 minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer and every 9 minutes someone dies from one. More than 1.3 million people are living with, or are in remission from Leukemia, Lymphoma & Myeloma. Sadly, more than 1/3 of blood cancer patients do not survive 5 years after diagnosis. LLS fund's research provides patients guidance, education & support. LLS also drives advocacy for policies that protect patients access to life saving treatments.

I am running to honor and celebrate two amazing Lovejoy students. Mallory Cass and Austin Bennett. Mallory is a 7th grader at Willow Springs Middle School and was diagnosed with Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in 2014. Austin is a senior at Lovejoy High School and was diagnosed with ALL in 2017. Mallory, Austin and so many others have fought and battled to beat this disease to get across the ultimate finish line of being cancer free!

I've been given the opportunity to raise money for LLS that provides funds to champion the fight in battling this disease. As you think about your charitable giving at the end of this year (or even in 2019) and where it can have the most impact, I ask that you consider helping me in this cause by donating to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.

Please help support me as I run to support LLS and those who have been touched by cancer! Because we all have a finish line to cross!"
