Great News for Ernestina-Morrissey 5/14/2018

New Bedford Community Preservation Grant Exciting news! Last Tuesday SEMA President Julius Britto attended the New Bedford Community Preservation Committee meeting where the Committee announced that they will send a recommendation to the City Council to fully fund SEMA's request for a $100,000 grant. SEMA requested the funds to help meet our pledge to raise $1,000,000 to be used for Ernestina-Morrissey's current rehabilitation.  The City Council will consider the recommendation and vote to approve the expenditure during their next few meetings. This grant will be matched 1:1 by the Manton Foundation! We are excited that the City has shown this support for Ernestina-Morrissey and her future in New Bedford.

We are thankful for the outpouring of support for our application from community leaders and residents. Let your City Counselor know how important Ernestina-Morrissey is to YOU today!

News from the Shipyard I was struck, on a recent trip to the shipyard, by the juxtaposition of “the old way” and the modern tools both in use by the shipwrights working on Ernestina-Morrissey READ MORE... In 1894 Effie M. Morrissey was fastened with trunnels and iron. Iron and wood served again when Ernestina was prepared for her return to Massachusetts in 1982. The current rehabilitation of Ernestina-Morrissey is using the traditional locust trunnels and READ MORE... The hull of a ship like Ernestina-Morrissey is curved from stem to stern and from keel to bulwarks. As a result every plank has to be shaped to fit with its mates to form those curves .  READ MORE...

Schooner Ernestina Commission Meeting The next Commission meeting is scheduled for Friday, May 25 at 2 pm at the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park Visitors' Center. 33 William St. New Bedford. Use the Main Entrance. The meeting room is the third floor conference room in the Corson Building.
