This is Mrs. Butler's 13th year at Jefferson and she loves teaching fifth grade. When Mrs. Butler started at Jefferson, her daughters were in preschool. They were both Jefferson students, then moved on to Parras Middle school and they are now both students at Redondo Union High School.
Mrs. Butler grew up in Los Angeles between Hollywood and Silverlake. She went to UCSD for her Bachelor’s Degree, then to Cal State Dominguez Hills for her teaching credential, and she received her Master’s in English from Loyola Marymount University. Her first teaching job was at Willowbrook Middle School in Compton when she was 22 year old. This first job experience helped her learn so much about teaching: "I still think I learned a lot more than I taught those first years."
Asked about her favorite place to visit, Mrs. Butler mentioned that she does not necessarily have one particular spot in mind, but she loves camping and backpacking. She camped in many different places, but the Sierra Nevada mountains feel like her home away from home.
If she could meet anyone, Mrs. Butler would love to have a chance to sit and talk with both Maya Angelou and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
For students who are struggling with school, Mrs. Butler has the following advice: "We become stronger when we are challenged. I know it is so hard to face struggles, but if you keep trying, you will learn about what a strong person you are."
