Board Elections are Coming and We Need You!
Have you considered volunteering your time on behalf of your community? The current two-year terms of office for two Village Board seats and the Columbia Association Council Representative seat expire on April 30, 2018. Village Board members attend one meeting a month where they oversee village finances, advise and take action on such matters as street and house maintenance, and advocate for changes that will benefit Harper's Choice. The Columbia Association Council Representative serves on the Village Board as an ex officio (non-voting) member and also serves as a voting member of the Columbia Association's Board of Directors.
The nomination period runs from March 1 - March 14, 2018

Columbia Cleanup Day Scheduled for Saturday, March 24 in All 10 Villages
Columbia can be even more beautiful, and the environment can be more healthy, after just three hours on Columbia Cleanup Day.
Columbia Cleanup Day will take place on Saturday, March 24 with volunteers simultaneously picking up trash that has accumulated at open space locations in all 10 villages. Nine of Columbia's villages are scheduled to work from 9am to noon, while the Kings Contrivance event will be held from 10am to 1pm.
This is the ninth year that Columbia Cleanup Day has been held since 2009. People who would like to participate can show up at the meeting locations. The meeting locations and clean-up areas are:
- Dorsey's Search: Meet at Dorsey Hall Pool (4649 Columbia Road). Clean the open space behind Dorsey Hall Pool and the playground area.
- Harper's Choice: Meet at Swansfield Neighborhood Center (5659 Cedar Lane). Clean the open space area behind Green Dory Lane, Woodenhawk Circle and Berrypick Lane.
- Hickory Ridge: Meet at Clary's Forest Pool (11615 Little Patuxent Parkway). Clean the open space in the middle of the Little Patuxent Parkway loop.
- Kings Contrivance: Meet at Amherst House (7251 Eden Brook Drive). Clean the open space and natural areas behind Amherst House and near Dickinson Pool. Please note that Kings Contrivance's cleanup will be held from 10am to 1pm.
- Long Reach: Meet at the cul-de-sac in the 6300 block of Tamar Drive. Clean the pathway and natural area from Tot Lot LR16 to Tot Lot LR15 (adjacent to Footed Ridge).
- Oakland Mills: Meet at Oakland Mills Village Center (5851 Robert Oliver Place). Clean along the pathway from Stevens Forest Road going toward Route 29.
- Owen Brown: Meet at the Lake Elkhorn parking lot on Dockside Lane lot off Cradlerock Way. Clean around Lake Elkhorn and the Forebay area.
- River Hill: Meet at Claret Hall in the River Hill Village Center (6020 Daybreak Circle). Clean the open space area between Columbia Gym and River Hill High School.
- Town Center: Meet at the Downtown Columbia Lakefront (10227 Wincopin Circle). Clean around Lake Kittamaqundi.
- Wilde Lake: Meet at Faulkner Ridge Neighborhood Center (15018 Marble Faun Court). Clean the open space around the neighborhood center.

Citizen Jane: Battle for the City Documentary Screening

During the Tuesday, April 3, 2018, HCCA Board of Directors meeting beginning at 7:00 pm at Kahler Hall, a representative(s) from Howard County Executive Allan H. Kittleman's office will be present to answer and address any questions or concerns that the Board and community may have. As always, the Board meetings are open and we encourage residents to attend and participate in the meetings and this meeting is no exception. HCHD and Grassroots Partner to Provide Walk-In Screening Services for Substance Use Disorders
The Howard County Health Department and Grassroots Crisis Center are partnering to provide screening services for those in need of substance use disorder (SUD) assistance. Grassroots will provide in-person screening to adults, youth and families who are dealing with addiction issues, with the technical assistance, training and community promotion provided by the Health Department.
A counselor will screen client, link them to treatment services in the community and assist to remove any barriers there might be to getting treatment. Walk-in crisis assistance will be available onsite at Grassroots' Freetown Road facility in Columbia from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily starting February 19. The location is accessible on the Orange Route of Howard Transit.

New Medicare Cards are Coming!
As you may already know, over the next year people with Medicare will be mailed new Medicare cards, with Maryland being in the first wave of the mailings (between April and June). To make everyone aware that the new cards are coming (there are approximately 47,000 Medicare beneficiaries in Howard County), we would appreciate it if you would distribute information to your clients, membership and/or staff. Below you will find a few quick background comments, as well as links to information about the new Medicare cards in a variety of formats and sizes; use the ones that best fit how your organization communicates.
The new cards have a Medicare number that is unique to each person, instead of their Social Security number. This will protect people's identities and keep their information safe.
People with Medicare do not need to take any action to get their new card and there is no cost. But, it is very important that they make sure that their mailing address is up-to-date.
If their mailing address needs to be corrected (perhaps because of a recent move), they need to contact Social Security at ssa.gov/myaccount or call 1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778).
Since there have already been reports of scam artists trying to take advantage of this change, people should beware of anyone contacting them about the new Medicare card; Medicare will not contact people to ask them about their personal information or to collect a fee to get their new Medicare Number or card.

Rain Garden Cost Share Program
The Columbia Association (CA) is once again offering the Rain Garden Cost Share Program as a cost-effective way to help residents who reside on the Little Patuxent Watershed to install rain gardens on their property. CA encourages residents throughout the community to plant rain gardens. CA, via a grant from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, will pay 75 percent of the rain garden installation cost, with the remaining 25 percent paid by the resident. CA also has a landscape firm on contract for installation.
Residents need to apply to their village Architectural Committee for approval. Once the rain garden application is approved, the resident pays the 25 percent share to CA. The maintenance agreement is signed, and the installation will be scheduled.

Architectural Committee Meetings
Changes made to the exterior of homes in Harper's Choice require approval of the Village Architectural Committee (AC).
The AC will meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month at 7:30 PM to review applications.
The deadline to submit applications for approval is two weeks prior to the next meeting date.
