Nine out of every 10 students in the United States attend public schools. Therefore,
access to high-quality public education is crucial not only for our children's success,
but for the strength of our society. It takes a team of dedicated people - teachers,
administrators, staff, parents and other community members - to provide that
education. The nine members of your local school board are a key part of this
team, making informed decisions that shape our public schools.
January is designated School Director Recognition Month, a time for us to celebrate and recognize the challenging and vital work school boards like ours do on behalf of students, schools and families. On average across the state, school directors devote up to 10 hours per month to the complex responsibilities of board business including adopting policy, voting on budgets, evaluating school security issues and reviewing hiring decisions.
As locally elected officials, school directors are invested in their communities. They are our neighbors, friends, local leaders, parents and engaged citizens. During this month designated for recognizing these public servants, please take a moment to express your gratitude for our very own North Penn school directors' time and efforts year-round on behalf of this community.
To recognize and celebrate the North Penn School District (NPSD) Board of School Directors, we asked some of our youngest learners at Oak Park Elementary School what they thought the school board does. As expected, these kindergarteners came up with some pretty interesting explanations. Take a moment to watch the video and see what our students had to say.

Cyber Security Presentation

The office of the Attorney General is sending a representative of the public engagement office to discuss internet safety for families. This program will include information regarding children on social media sites; their digital footprint and how it may affect their future;
cyber bullying; and child predators, as well as provide resources and information for parents looking to protect their families over the internet.
The program is approximately 90 minutes and is free of charge to attend.

Snow is bound to hit NPSD this winter! When the weather outside is frightful, NPSD Superintendent Dr. Curt Dietrich is very busy consulting with various school district departments, other school districts and weather outlets to assess conditions and whether school needs to be delayed, dismissed or cancelled. It is not an easy job.
On snowy mornings, Dr. Dietrich (if he sleeps at all) is awake for a conference call before 5 am. It is NPSD's hope that school delays and closings will be decided and posted via district communication channels by 5:30 am. In some challenging situations, that may not happen but the decision is always made as soon as possible.

Important: At the upcoming December meeting, representatives from the district's curriculum department will be available from 1:00 to 1:30 pm to discuss questions from parents and community members.
The North Penn School District and NPSD Superintendent Dr. Curt Dietrich are excited to once again offer families and community members the opportunity to speak one-on-one about important issues involving NPSD schools. Community Conversations, a series of informal meetings, gives attendees the chance to talk freely with Dr. Dietrich and share their concerns and suggestions for the NPSD.
In addition to addressing participant concerns, Dr. Dietrich will give summarized updates on school district news and ask for feedback and input on important district issues while allowing time for open questions from parents/guardians and community members. NPSD is working on multi-year solutions that focus on student success, staff development, financial security and a safe, healthy and orderly environment. This is an ideal opportunity for open discussion!
All North Penn community members, whether they have children in North Penn schools or not, are invited to attend these informative Community Conversations with Dr. Dietrich.

The Harlem Wizards Return to North Penn
|
The Harlem Wizards are once again traveling to North Penn High School (NPHS) to take on The North Penn Dream Team, an All-Star cast of NPSD employees and alumni on Saturday, January 25 at 7:00 pm.
Hosted by the NPHS Booster Club, the evening promises to be an outrageously entertaining event that is great for audiences of all ages. The Wizards vs. Dream Team game will offer a fun-packed two hours of family time where parents, grandparents and kids of all ages can laugh together.

NPHS Holds Mock Democratic Convention
|
More than 1,000 North Penn students recently participated in the
Mock Democratic Convention held at NPHS.
The first mock convention was held in 1976 by North Penn teacher H. James Finnemeyer, who created it as an opportunity to spark students' interest in politics through immersion in a real-world scenario. Classes were divided into delegations representing US states and territories, with the ultimate goal of nominating a candidate to run for President of the United States. Delegations debated student-selected political issues, develop a party platform, and selected a candidate to nominate.
Andrew Yang was the runaway winner in the high school's simulated 2020 Democratic presidential nominating convention.

NPHS Cultural Competency Student Ambassadors Meet with Neighboring Schools and Local NAACP Reps
|
Students from North Penn, Cheltenham, Norristown and Upper Dublin high schools recently met at NPHS to talk about equity, social justice and student voices. These student ambassadors are scheduled to meet three more times this year to continue this important conversation. The goal is to create a space that allows students from neighboring school districts to form a group of student ambassadors and social justice advocates to address issues and challenges within their schools, districts, communities and beyond. Thank you to the local NAACP branches for their support and involvement!

NPHS Alum Donate to NPSD Educational Foundation
|
The NPSD Educational Foundation recently received donations as a result of their long standing support of the Technology and Engineering Education Department at NPHS.
Two recent NPHS engineering academy alumni made individual donations of $250 and $1,000 to the Foundation to be used toward student needs in this curriculum area. Thank you to Kyle O'Connor ('19) and Nick Pleim ('15) for their generous commitment to their Alma Mater. This donation is a testament to the quality program provided at NPHS and the amazing teachers who inspire our students.

Needed Facility Improvements Move Ahead
|
This month NPSD took two important steps in providing our community safe, efficient and 21st century facilities.
First, an Act 34 meeting was held on January 7th to share with the community our plans for renovations and additions at Knapp Elementary School. The public has 30 days from this date to provide comments regarding the project.
The proposed $26.9 million plan involves renovations to the existing building, the construction of a 13,000-square-foot classroom addition and a new driveway for school buses.
It also includes an enhanced, reconfigured front entrance and large group instruction area.
The project incorporates input the district received from staff, knapp families and community members over the past several months.
Once approved, work is expected to begin this summer with completion for the 2021-2022 school year. More detailed information on the Knapp project can be found here.
The school board also recently accepted bids for the renovations of Crawford Stadium at NPHS. This $8.19 million project of the almost 50-year old facility is needed to make the stands handicapped accessible, the bathrooms capable of servicing thousands of visitors and the field usable as we change it from grass to turf. For many years now, the soil conditions of the field have been such that it is often not even used by our teams, forcing us to use neighboring facilities. A new turf field will allow more teams and community groups to use Crawford Stadium. Additional enhancements to Crawford Stadium include an eight lane track, new concession facilities and ticket booths, and a new press box.
The school district and board of school directors wants people excited and engaged in the upcoming stadium work, for it is a center point of this great North Penn community. That said, NPSD in partnership with the NPSD Educational Foundation is excited to announce A Stadium for the Future: Building Our Legacy Together, a community campaign to support the work needed at Crawford Stadium. Part of this will be a fundraising gala on April 24, U-Knight to Celebrate, an evening at PineCrest Country Club featuring guest speaker Brandon McManus, NPHS '09 alum and kicker for the Denver Broncos. Then on Saturday, April 25th, Brandon and the Foundation will host the Brandon McManus Kickball Tournament at NPHS. The fun day will include a tournament for students and a homerun derby.
The primary goal of North Penn Stadium for the Future: Building Our Legacy Together is to raise funds to support the needed renovations, but also to engage the North Penn community as we build a stadium for our future. More information on both events will be ready in early February.

The NPSD Educational Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to motivate and inspire students and staff through innovative projects and opportunities that enhance educational experiences and resources is currently seeking a part-time Development Manager (20 hours/week) and a part-time Administrative Coordinator (15-20 hours/week) to join its team!

In celebration of black history, NPSD students in grades three through 12 were recently encouraged to participate in the NPSD Black History Oratorical Competition which will culminate in a final competition round held on Thursday, February 6 at Penndale Middle School from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. The community is encouraged to attend.

It's Time to Register for Kindergarten
|
Students must be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2019 to enter Kindergarten for the 2019-2020 school year. Our school policy does not allow exceptions to this date.
NPSD utilizes a full-day kindergarten program in all of its 13 elementary schools.

Water Tower Cinema's Making its Popcorn Count - Supporting NPSD Educational Foundation throughout the Month of January
|
Throughout the month of January, the North Penn community can enjoy a movie and at the same time benefit North Penn schools. A new partnership between the Water Tower Cinema and the NPSD Educational Foundation means that 20% of concession proceeds on Mondays and Tuesdays throughout the month of January will go directly to the Foundation to fund innovative classroom grants.
On Monday, January 20th, the theater will be screening SELMA in commemoration with Martin Luther King Day and increasing its giving allocation to 40% of all concession sales.
