Ferry Service Interruptions Expected with Crane Arrival Next Week

BHI Transportation issued the following announcement this week on the anticipated impacts on ferry service next week.

"On Thursday, 29th of March the U.S. Coast Guard intends to halt all vessel traffic in the Cape Fear River to facilitate the safe passage of a ship carrying large cranes up to the port in Wilmington. CLICK HERE to read the Passenger Notice which describes the likely impact on ferry service during this time. Barge operations may be slightly affected as well. This is all subject to change due to weather. Updates will be posted as necessary."

Bond Referendum Presentations Scheduled - March 14th & 15th

For those who missed the presentation at the March Village Council meeting, long-time coastal engineer Erik Olsen will present detailed information on the proposal on Saturday, April 14th at the BHI Club from 4:30-5:15pm and Sunday, April 15th from 9:30am (after Chapel services) to 10:15am at the Association Center

Voting Details
BHI property owners who meet certain criteria, including being a legal resident of Brunswick County for 30 days prior to the election and not being registered nor voting in another county or state, can register and vote in the election. CLICK HERE to review the criteria for voting. Voter registration deadline is April 13th.

Absentee ballots are now available and can be requested using THIS FORM. Copies of the request form are also available at Village Hall. Absentee ballots must be received by the election office by 5pm on May 1st.

Additional information will be available in the coming days and weeks. This is a significant effort and commitment and BHA encourages all property owners to familiarize themselves with the proposal.
Village Update

Village Manager Chris McCall sent out an informative update on Village activities this week. The update provided updates on the bond election, Spectrum WiFi, mulch, permits, flood insurance maps and more.

BHA Office Closed Good Friday

The Bald Head Association administrative office will be closed on Friday, March 30th in recognition of the Good Friday holiday. The office will reopen on Monday, April 2nd at 8:30am. Contact the office at 910-457-4676 x21 with questions.
Last Call for ReStore Donations

Last call for donated items to be picked up and delivered at no cost to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Southport. On April 11th, a truck is scheduled to pick up donated items and take them to the mainland. If you have items you want to include, contact Julie Starcher at 910-457-4676 x23 or [email protected] and tell her what you'd like to donate. CLICK HERE for a listing of items the ReStore accepts. Island-wide Spring Litter Sweep
Saturday, March 31st; 11am-1pm
Meet at Fire Station

Join friends and neighbors for the next Island-wide litter sweep on Saturday, March 31st from 11am - 1pm. Meet at the Fire Station and pick up bags, gloves and grabbers then pick a portion of the Island to clean. Prizes for the most unusual litter found.

Handmade Card Class
Wednesday, April 4th; 2-5pm
BHA's Association Center

Join the next card-making class with Pattie Caban to make 12 cards (4 each of 3 different designs). The fee is $30 and class size is limited to 8 individuals, ages 12 and older.  All materials needed to complete the cards are furnished.

Shag Dance Lessons
April 5, 12 and 19; 6-7pm
BHA's Association Center

Bald Head Association is excited to present shag dance lessons! Instructors John Hutton and Katy O'Neill will teach classes from 6-7pm on three Thursdays in April - April 5th, 12th and 19th. Classes will be held at the Association Center. Each class is $10/person or $20/couple. Sign up for one class or all three (recommended). RSVP to Debra Lyons at [email protected]. Vet Clinic

Dr. Audra Rickman from Four Paws Animal Hospital will be back on the Island for the next Vet Clinic on Wednesday, April 11th from 8:45am - 1:30pm. The clinic will be held at the Fire Station. Call Dr. Rickman's office now at 910-457-7387 to make an appointment.

Easter Baskets for Young and Old(er)
Deadline Monday, March 26th

For the past 10 years, the Shoals Club has offered Easter Basket delivery to its members on Easter Sunday - facilitated by "Captain Charlie the Easter Turtle." Beginning this year, the Maritime Market will be taking over this tradition from the Shoals Club, and is offering baskets for kids (under 12), along with teens and even grown-ups. So, here are the details and the deadlines for this year's Easter Basket delivery:
  • CLICK HERE to order your Easter Baskets. Please fill out one form for each basket recipient. Order deadline is Monday, March 26th at NOON.
  • Baskets will be ready for pick-up at the Market on Saturday, March 31st between Noon and 8pm - or - for a small fee, Captain Charlie the Easter Turtle will deliver the baskets to your home between 9am - 11am on Easter Sunday.
  • Baskets for kids (under 12) and teens are $40 each, and contain a variety of age-appropriate games, toys, beach items and assorted candies.
  • Baskets for grown-ups are $55 each, and can be either wine or beer-themed, along with assorted goodies appropriate for each style of basket.

Marsh Presentation by BHI Conservancy's Chris Shank

BHI Conservancy Executive Director Chris Shank will present part three of his marsh ecology presentations on Monday, March 26th at 1pm in the Flemming classroom on the BHI Conservancy campus. The first two sessions have been outstanding and very well attended. A ll lovers of BHI are welcome to attend.
Village Chapel of BHI
RE-CYCLE Project Weekly Update

The Village Chapel's RE-CYCLE BHI bike collection project now has a permanent drop-off site for used bicycles. Residents are invited to leave used bikes inside Container 14, located behind the contractors' parking lot, next to the light green contractors' building. Tax receipts and coupons for 10% off a new bike from Island Hardware are available. For more information contact Anne Rex ( [email protected]) or Gayle Sanders ( [email protected]).
Residents are also invited to drop off their bikes at the Chapel's first Collection Day event on Saturday, March 31st from 8am until noon at the old tent site in the Harbour Village. Or contact Darryl Early ( [email protected]) or Steve McCoy ( [email protected]) for a free pick-up. Cash donations are also welcome.
All bikes are donated to the Bicycle Man project in Fayetteville which restores and repairs bikes and distributes them to children in five NC counties. Children also receive new helmets and winter coats.
BHI Community Blood Drive

The annual BHI Community Blood Drive in honor of long-time property owner Ray Webb will be held on Tuesday, March 27th from 10am - 2pm at the Association Center. For an appointment to donate blood, contact Chris Webb at 910-231-8065 or [email protected].

BHI Artisans Show and Sale
Saturday, March 31st; 10am-5pm
BHA's Association Center

The Bald Head Island Artisans will host their annual Show and Sale on Saturday, March 31st from 10am to 5pm at the Association Center. The event is free and open to the public.
 
Numerous unique handcrafted items created by island artisanswill be on display.  The very pretty American Girl Doll clothes are being joined by the boy clothes. Beaut iful handcrafted jewelry will be available. Bird home replicas of historical BH I buildings and wooden carved fish decoys will be for sale.
 
The Artisans are seeking new members. All island property owners who make their own handcrafted items are encouraged to join. Items may include but are not limited to photographs, soaps,candles, children's clothing and toys, etc.  For more information, ple ase contact Sally Klippel at [email protected] or  404-692-8652.
BHI Conservancy 2018 Turtle Trots
First Race: Saturday, March 31st

The BHI Conservancy is holding a Turtle Trot race on Saturday, March 31st. Registration begins at 8:30am and the run starts at 9:30am. CLICK HERE for more information.
Peter Rabbit Visits BHI

The Marsh Harbour Inn is hosting Peter Rabbit on the front porch on Saturday, March 31st with a meet and greet from 12-1pm, followed by story time from 1-2pm and photos with Peter from 2-3pm. Marsh Harbour Inn is located at 21 Keelson Row in the Harbour.
Howl at the Moon
Saturday, March 31st at 6:30pm
Beach Access #39

The next Howl at the Moon will be held on Saturday, March 31st at 6:30pm at Beach Access 39. BYOB and an appetizer to share and the Market will bring a big pot of soup for all to enjoy. Please be sure to pull golf carts completely off the road so emergency vehicles can pass by.

Easter Egg Hunt
Sunday, April 1st
BHI Club

The BHI Club will be holding an Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday, April 1st at the Club. Children up to 5 years of age will hunt for eggs at 9am, children 5 -8 years of age will hunt at 9:30am and children 9 - 12 years of age will do so at 10am. Bring your baskets and join the hunt with the Easter Bunny. Golden eggs & refreshments. No fee to enter.
