Straight from the Head
The Juniors at the Supreme Court.  Future Justices.

This month we took our annual trip to Washington, DC with the Junior Class.  Each year, this trip culminates our study of American History and prepares the rising seniors for their leadership roles in the coming year. The theme was "Freedom," and we discussed the important connection between our American system of government and our philosophy of education.  Surprisingly to many, the two are intricately linked.

Abraham Lincoln understood this when he remarked, "The philosophy of the schoolroom in one generation will be the philosophy of the government in the next."   Government , particularly the American system, is based on maintaining the delicate balance between tyranny and anarchy.  Coming out of an oppressive monarchy, the colonists greatly valued their liberties as Christian and English citizens to govern themselves.  At the same time they realized the dangers of freedom running wild and wanted to protect future generations from a mob mentality, where "everyone does right in their own eyes."  --Judges 21:25

The solution to these extremes, the founders believed, was a self-governing people who were controlled by the inward checks of conscience guided by Scriptures and the Holy Spirit.  "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious  people," said John Adams, "It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

Religion, which includes the recognition of God's standards of right and wrong and the reliance of the Holy Spirit to walk in those standards, is the basis of free government. Not only are free governments dependent on self-control, our school also recognizes true virtue comes from within.

Avoiding the extremes of legalism or license requires an often difficult balance of allowing people the freedom to make good and bad decisions while providing consistent restraints that promote the welfare of all. This process of governing is never easy and clean, but by God's grace our American system has sustained a government of the people, by the people, and for the people longer than any other constitution to date.   Preparing young people to live, thrive, and eventually lead in that system is one of the great tasks given to us as educators.

Sorry Emily!  We forgot to mention your last name last week.  Emily Mitchum, grade 7.  (After placing 2nd All Around in the NC State meet, Emily was invited to attend the Southeast Regional XCEL Silver gymnastics competition in Daytona Beach, FL. Emily competed on Saturday, April 28th and placed 2nd All Around. In addition, Emily is the 1st place Balance Beam Champion for the Southeast.)
Congrats Emily Mitchum!

Matthew and Naomi Haskins went to Birmingham, Alabama May 4-6 along with over 2000 people to commemorate the 55th anniversary of the 1963 Children's Crusade, where schoolchildren in Birmingham walked out of school and marched to protest segregation laws. They were met by fire hoses, police dogs, and arrested. Their bravery sparked nationwide outrage that led to desegregation. We must all remember that children have the power to make a difference.
